Me and my husband were in queue for a Scarlet S35. Both are artists, and still photographers too. With the recent announcement of a price increase, it seems hard to believe the new camera may bring a valid option. Why not a Red camera for DSMC but same price range of Nikon D3x or Canon 1D Mark4?

Because RED announced that they would only be a professional camera manufacturer from now on. Prices similar to that of the VDSLRs mean compromises in some areas and that is not what the professional market stands for.

But Nikon D3X and Canon 1D Mark4 are both professional still cameras.

You're right, they are both professional stills cameras, but not considered by most to be professional motion cameras.
    Apples and Oranges.

Also - the D3X doesn't even shoot motion.

If you only want to shoot stills, the Nikon and Canon are fantastic. If you need to shoot both stills and motion, Scarlet and Epic are unmatched. Matter of fact, if you only want to shoot motion, Epic is unmatched.

    Hey Nicole,

I think the Scarlet S35 (now Epic Light) was priced at $7,000 for the body before the addition of HDR capability which added about $1,000. which puts it .05¢ more expensive than the $7,999.95 list price of the Nikon D3x. The Canon EOS-1Ds is a good deal cheaper than both the Scarlet and the Nikon at $6,999 but I would definitely but them in the same ballpark if not the same seating section. So if you were merely looking at price they are in the same ballpark.

You would have to lay out the specs to see if you want to pay the extra for a few megapixels here or there or if an additional 60+ frames per second (burst mode) makes sense for you. The way I see it you get sooo much more with an Epic Light that it isn't even close. Just being able to use Nikon or Canon or RED or PL mount lenses is unheard of from DSLR bodies. With all due respect to filmmakers who are creating fantastic moving images with DSLR's but I don't think I am saying anything controversial when I say that motion is not in the same league as RED.

Check out this thread it shows some of the info on the Scarlet/Epic Light and even an interesting picture with a Scarlet next to a Nikon body.

Ralph, great points. I think we forget how expensive the top of the line vDSLR's actually are.

If you are interest in RED mainly from a still image point of view.... it is dependent on what type of shooting you do... for instance, if you are a landscape artist, the benefits of high fps seem lost.

Sports could be very good, but AE and AF need to be tested before anyone (except maybe the RED team) can say this, for sure.

Studio work seems to be where the Epic would really shine... catching that perfect frame at 120fps should be a breeze. I wonder if s35 sensor is enough though? Maybe worth waiting for the medium format Epic?

If you want still and video though.... Epic Light should be well worth the extra money.
