Just got a GoPro HD Hero a few weeks back and i've had a blast with it. Really good quality visuals from something so small and tough (as long as you use it outside on a sunny day/around midday on an overcast day)

Still, i'm left wondering how I could intercut it with some RED footage I have...

...which got me thinking about a RED built crash camera.

No onboard debayering. Fixed wide lens. 2/3" or smaller MX sensor. Water/shock proof casing. Controlled via RedMote. Records to CF.

Resolution? I'd be happy with 2K but we know RED don't swing that way.

    Let's say 3K@30fps, cropped 2K@60fps. Redcode 20:1

MAX twice the size of the gopro (though knowing how much they crammed in an Epic I wouldn't be shocked if it was half the size of the gopro haha)

$1,000 in 5-6 years time... Thoughts?

Once the Scarlet/Epic line have been shipping for a while would you consider making a camera like this, Jim?

Thoughts? 5-6 years time? Six years ago the RED Digital Camera Company did not exist! 5 - 6 years time .... NOBODY KNOWS!

5-6 years from now, 8K full frame/medium format sized chips will most likely be the rage. imo.

    Should be cool.

    cant wait.

I'm just being realistic. 2 years for DSMC (cameras and accessories) to be adopted all over various industries, manufacturing/supplier kinks worked out, etc.

2 more years for Monstro cameras to start coming out.

2 more years for next major line of accessories to come out in numbers/ Monstro cameras to mature.

While the Monstro cameras are maturing (i.e firmware updates, no physical redesigns or tweaks) then what other markets can RED capture?

High speed imaging on the high end (which RED have seemed a bit reluctant to do: high FPS costs real money and certain companies seem to have that market segment cornered with ever improving cameras) and crash/sports cameras on the lower end of the professional market.

Would anyone else like to see such a product? Personally I want RAW motion acquisition for every type of camera my work needs. Wether it's a feature, a TV show shot in a studio or within a cramped old mining tunnel I want RED quality images at RED prices.

If there's demand I'm sure they'll consider it.

I'm just thinking of the design. They'll have plenty of MX wafers being fabricated around the clock on a massive scale. Redmote related WiFi components should be plentiful. The innards/processing power should both be much lower than a R1 and cheaper due to moore's law and whatnot.

Thermal issues would be complicated a little bit due to the kind of sturdy/waterproof housing you would need but it's nothing RED's engineers can't solve.

    So, any takers?

It might be interesting if Red took their 2/3" 3K sensor out of the Scarlet and made as tiny & stripped-down a camera as possible.

The thing with the GoPro is that a tiny sensor and a super wide-angle lens together gives them enough depth of field to not worry about focusing. Once you start putting in larger and higher-resolution sensors, you're going to need to focus the lens.

Exactly, anything above 2/3" would cripple the camera for it's intended purpose. Even 2/3" might be too big.

I was wondering David if you've ever tested the GoPro out for one of your Tv shows or features as a light weight/small pov/crash cam?

    Thanks :)

So, anyone with more engineering know how than I do (pretty much everyone) do you think it's possible to have a 2K@30FPS REDRAW minimum crash camera in 5-6 years time?

The future of RED seems to be bigger and bigger sensors, not smaller. Anything's possible though. Maybe that's what all the old M sensors will be used for...

Looks like everybody's on the same page here. I thought the Scarlet original specs would scratch this itch. I'm glad it didn't. I think the Go Pro is a forward trending Professional space in the market and I believe Red will serve this area soon. I put some of my thoughts into a 3D mock up. Nothing fancy, just a place to put what I felt the segment needed-- the final look and form-factor will be set by Red after much design work.

I would love this in 4K. Anyway...

I've been calling this "Poco Rosso" or "Rosi". Anyway, I'd love about three or four sets of these--
