And probably for good reason. My Quad G5 is pretty darn fast, the last of the PPC line. Would have been nice to be able to run Redcine on it, even if it were a bit slower than running Intel. But I get where Red is going with this. Much easier to develop for one platform.

I have a Macbook Pro that I will use for Redcine and then I'll use my current PPC mac to do the editing. Most of the time I'll be editing in 720, 1080, maybe 2K. I'll probably upgrade the CPU when the next generation of Macs come out.

If your spending $30K+ for a properly equipped Red, another $3K for a powerful enough computer to do post with shouldn't be the thing that breaks the bank IMHO.

For sure I will be getting a new Mac, just not the current crop of 8 cores. I want to wait it out a bit and see what they come out with in the next few months. In the meantime I'm hoping to get by with the Macbook Pro and the G5 Quad. If that combo doesn't work, I might be forced into buying a new mac sooner than expected. Although not a huge amount of money in the overall scheme of things, it's still $5000 that needs to be spent wisely. And seeing that I won't need a new one for at least another month, I'm not to anxious to go out and get one right now.

But overall, you are correct, the computer is a relatively small part of the investment.

Also Noah, I think we have to keep in mind that some people will be just scraping by with the purchase of the camera. They may not have a lot of extra cash to spend on a new computer system. You can make an argument that this is a mistake on their part for not considering the entire workflow, but on the other hand, you can understand the excitement surrounding this camera and some just want to be able to go shoot their films and figure out the post stuff later. I think it says a lot about what Red is bringing to the table.

True but I do think it's a worthy consideration for the would-be enthusiasts. Folks thinking that $17.5K is all they need to go out and shoot with Red are in for a surprise. Not that getting a loan for all of the other gear that is truly essential is impossible, but the sooner folks get started figuring out your financing of a fully decked-out package the better off they'll be. And imho a top-model computer is a small but critical expense in that context.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more Noah. For me, I see this as an expansion of my business model. I've been working on securing financing for months now, knowing that when all was said and done this was going to be a sizaeble investment. The fun part has been figuring out exactly what my system will entail from lenses to support gear to post equipment.

But I'm sure there are folks out there who for one reason or another have not been able to implement a business plan to cover all of the expenses involved and they will have just enough to be able to go out and shoot some footage. I'm sure they will figure the rest out. It will just take longer and could be a lot of hassle but in the end, they're rocking with their Red Camera and I love the spirit of everyone involved here because there is such a wide range of people from those just getting started to truly seasoned pros. Everyone gets to learn from each other. It's technology at it's best.

By the way, you've always been a great resource on the various forums. Keep up the good work! Do you have any features in the works?
