  1. #1 New MacBooks for you Mac-lovers... (no, they can't do 4K yet)
    My Mac-loving brethren...

Mike scooped Macrumors scooping faster MacBooks and a 2.6ghz MacBook Pro option with more hard drive space...

No, I don't think they can edit 4K yet. I'll see you guys and girls here next year as we wait for those roadmap-rumored quad-core laptop processors while wearing our lucky turtlenecks ;)

Now all of the unemployed people writing scripts in the coffee shop next door to my house are going to have to upgrade. Ouch, feel the burn! But hey, they'll have the fastest Final Draft ever!

That's me, Mr "still using a 2.8ghz single-core P4 PC and a 1.4ghz single-core AMD PC at home" signing off for the day... going to try to hold out on upgrading until Jan 2009, wish me luck.

I love my new Macbook Pro, but I'll never by a brand new Mac again. They just don't hold their value at all. So best to buy second hand.

By the way Bruce, you can cut 4K on a laptop today IMHO. Besides, don't you need a 4K monitor to cut in real 4K anyways.

Holy... I was stating the obvious wasn't I. Or just thinking out loud. I guess maybe the problem is just particularly bad on Mac.

    Hehe.

Actually, I've found the Mac to hold their value better than any other PC. But that's not saying much... Values drop fast no matter what. I pretty much figure that if a computer doesn't pay for itself within the first 6 months of owning it, you either didn't need it or you bought the wrong computer. Of course, a home/gaming computer or one for personal use is a different matter, but that doesn't mean they don't go obsolete just as fast.

Over the past couple years it seems depreciation on computers has accelerated quite a bit. :waaa:

My shiny new 17 incher is doing well. Still shiny and has traveled to Spain, France and soon Israel in its short life.

Went to my Mac dealer today and the 250Gb Drive is 5400rpm so maybe not the best for video a la RED methinks. They do have a new 200Gb 7200rpm drive available so will upgrade mine next week.

    Cheers,
    Mark.

FWIW, the 250GB 5400rpm HDD is faster than the 160GB 7200rpm HDD. Rotational speed is only one factor, but in the end, it's all about how much data passes under the read heads per second. The 200GB 7200rpm does have the advantage of faster seek times and it is the fastest drive overall, by a slight margin over that 250GB unit.

I wouldn't buy a 200GB HD from Apple, at least without finding out if it's Hitachi or Seagate. The new 200 dolar Hitachi Travelstar 200GB 7200 RPM is blazing fast, the fastest it can get, much better than Seagate, BTW.

I would normally agree with taubkin on this... But it's going to be impossible to tell which drive is in the system without actually powering up the system and pulling up a system profile. I'd be willing to gamble that I'd get the Hitachi because Apple ships most of their systems with Hitachi drives and only fall back to other manufacturers if there are supply issues.

...If I did happen to get an MBP with the Seagate, I'd probably just shrug it off and accept that my drive is about 8% slower than it could be in overall performance (about what the benchmarks I've seen say the difference is).

Why would I have this attitude? Simple... Have you ever gone through the brain damage of swapping out a hard drive on a Macbook Pro? I curse the designers at Apple who opted to not make the HDD directly accessible. The drive swap process is a real PITA, time consuming and a good way to screw up your MBP -- even if you know what you're doing and you just slip.

Any other notebook with direct HDD access, even the Macbook, I would just buy with the cheapest HDD option and swap it out with the aftermarket drive I want.
