Red Alert Export for Premiere

Greetings. What is best format to export from Red Alert if we intend to edit in Premiere? Will the quicktimes be at full quality? Are they uncompressed? This is for a shoot next weekend. The Premiere project and final output will be 1080p. Thanks.

Hi Edgar,

In order to answer your question, a number of factors need to be known including:

1) Are you intending to edit and finish in Pr or will the finishing be accomplished in Ae, SCRATCH or another application?

2) You mention 1080p as your target, but do you need deeper than 8 bit color support?

3) What is the delivery target for this project?

4) How much horse power do you have on the Pr machine?

Hey Kevin. Thanks for your response. This is for a direct to DVD film (with a 1080 master for satellite and possibly BR) that is in the final stages of editing. We are getting some pickup and insert shots of a 19th century tall ship at sea. We are in Dallas, but the filming will be in San Diego. We are editing in Premiere with the Cineform codec and color correcting and finishing in AE.

Since it is direct to DVD, will the 2K QT proxies provide enough resolution? Could use these to edit and export our screener DVDs, and then once RedCine is released export higher quality footage and replace for our 1080 master? We have a quad core Zeon workstation that we are editing on.

Hi Edgar,

Since your project is coming up soon, you will likely have to use RedAlert! as RedCine is unlikely to be out in time. I am assuming that you are on the latest Adobe software and will be using Encore CS3 for your BRD authoring, is this correct?

If you are going to provide SD DVDs for your screeners, the 2k proxies should be more than adequate. For your BRD release, you might want to test the quality differences between the QTs and dpx/tif sequence out of RedAlert! to see if its justified.

For your "satellite" deliverables, will this be output to broadcast standard tape like DigiBeta or will you be providing the material on some other media?

A quad core Xeon workstation should be just fine for any of the above.
