    Hey Guys,

Ive been using REDCine to transcode my 4.5k R3d files into 1080p ProRes422 Proxy's Debayered @ 1/4. Everything is going well, the 'white paper' for RCX was pretty informative on how to do this.

What it doesnt say is how to conform with RCX. Im i supposed to use the Log and Transfer in FCP to conform using Media Manager? If not, how to i go back to my 4k R3Ds/ProRes4444? Im sure that RCX is better than the Log and Transfer window in FCP, but I dont know the step by step process on how to do it. I guess im looking for a 'white papter' for how to conform with RCX.

EDIT: I should note that I am aware that i will need to export an EDL or XML, I have not really worked with these much. Is there a preference in what to use? Why?

Edit# 2, it looks like the FCP XML worked and that RCX has automatically picked up the 4k data from my Proxy's. So now i just need to Export my Timeline to either a ProRes4444 Quicktime or I can do a Wrapped R3d to keep the 4k and then send that to Color? Why do people sometimes go back to FCP? Or do they go back to FCP after they send to Color, not RCX?

Do i want to Generate FCP XML when making QuickTime Wrappers? I choose YES and did a test export of Wrappers, it looks like it made F,H,M,and P Proxy of the full clips that i choose. I think the XML it creates is supposed to be imported back into FCP and it is a new sequence linked to my F Proxy's that i just created so i may send that to Color? I can not however, find where that new XML went :/

I may have just figured it out on my own, but id love for someone to confirm my finds or give tips/advice.

    Thanks,

    Art

    Hey Art,

If your goal is to simply get into Color for grading, there isn't really a need to go back to RedcineX if you have already generated your dailies to cut with. As long as you have not messed with the file names and they still match the R3D files/TC still matches you are good to go to simply reconnect within Color to the R3D files. At that point you could even render your media out to DPX if you think you will get a better performance within Color.

If you export an XML from FCP you can then take that into Clipfinder where you can relink the XML to your original R3D files. And then within Color, import the XML and it should link back to the R3Ds once you point it to that media during the import.
The main way to know your connected to the R3Ds in Color is you should have the RED tab available for manipulating the coloring. If this is grayed out you are still referencing the dailies files.

Here is a video on how to do this:

Just so Im clear , the first paragraph you basically said that :

I can send my Sequences made from dailies, made from RXC, to Color and it will look at the original R3D files. There is no need to go back to RCX. From there, I can export at 4k quality?

If this is the case, then why should i export XML to Clipfinder in order to relink to my original R3Ds?

Within your XML created from FCP, it will be pointing to the dailies files and not your R3D files, so Clipfinder will change the XML so that it is pointing to the R3Ds instead for Color. Mind you I didn't realize you wanted to render your final output in 4K. I'm not sure if you can even grade in 4K within Color? Are you even able to monitor a 4K output? I have only ever finished within Color at 1080P as that was my final deliverable.

You could definitely just take an EDL into RedcineX and apply a color treatment back in RedcineX to your footage (or Storm for that matter) and then render out your 4K files if this is what you would want. But you can't compare RedcineX's coloring abilities to Color when it comes to secondaries, tracking or layering effects so that is why I had suggested going the Color route.
