oh that's so strange because I was under the impression that a Tonaci Tran came as a standard feature with ALL epics... well, guess I shouldn't just look at pictures and make conclusions.

Hey Mark, when I said Epic "features" I meant all these big feature films now shooting on Epic 3D ...... not actual features of the camera. Those will all be ready pretty soon, from what it seems.
And I was expressing the sadness that my excitement over feature films shooting on Epic now or this year won't be viewable for 1-2 years from now :(
I would love to be part of the crews and get to review footage (especially on 4k projectors) after principal photography is done -- so jealous of guys like Brook ....

P.S. -- Though it's not Epic, I am very excited about Pirates 4 being released in 2 months!!!!
Tonaci, I hope you'll have some of the 3D stuff you're shooting viewable at NAB. Will definitely be in line for that :)

I have spent the last few days in the Road Grader supporting Tonaci's Epic + Atom shoot. I am happy to report that we have been able to view 3D rushes using RedCineX. The process is relatively simple, you open the left eye clip and flip it vertically and/or horizontally depending on the rig set up, then do the same for the right eye clip, then you marry them by selecting 3D clip. RCX automatically sets the frame offset (it is sometimes one frame off so you have to check the sticks and slip it if needed, the adjustment is one click).
We are playing back on the 46" JVC using side by side. I have it connected to the second DVI port on the video card on my Mac tower via a DVI to HDMI crossover cable. ZERO crashes, I kid you not, zero, no hangs, it just works. We are using 416ER. We are not using a Rocket (its in my Scratch box) so playback stutters when you get past the buffer but the director, DP and Stereographer have been thrilled to be able to review footage and actually like the pauses so they can inspect the image more carefully.
Props to the RedCineX team (Rob, Graeme, Deanan, et al) for an amazingly stable beta.
Cheers - #19
Yeah, serious props to the RED team for the 3D support in Redcine-X. It has been kinda scary hearing about the price of 3D software and the extra steps and hardware needed to actually get 3D footage on a 3D monitor. If you shoot with RED the program is FREE. We were going out of the DVI port on Blair's Mac Pro and into the HDMI port on the JVC 3D monitor. BOOM it just works.
Settings like HIT, vertical adjustments and color matching left and right eye were greyed out so they are right around the corner. It's crazy all this is free.
Third day with Epic + Atom. Joel Moore (actor in Avatar) directing Brandon Routh (superman). Just got back from a long day so will respond to questions tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the kind words. Been checking out 3d dailies in Blair's road grader...can't wait until you all see this at NAB.

Seriously though!! I haven't stopped smiling ever since I picked the Epic-M up. I have some behind the scenes video where Jarred dropped by for the big day. Jarred knows how freakin excited I am.. =)
