  1. #1 Fixed Scarlet's LCD
Whats the latest on the touch screen LCD for the Scarlet. I tried to search the forum but found different info. The early specs said a 2.8 touch screen but I have a vague memory of hearing that it was too small for professional use. Recent outings of the Fixed have had a 5.0 LCD attached. So I was wondering what options have been talked about by RED or don't we know for sure?

*Im guessing a 5.0 screen will add quite a bit to the price of any fixed package and want something a bit smaller anyway.

I can't find the reference just now but I do most definitely recall seeing a post from Jim or Jarred confirming the 2.8" had been canned as unusable.

Jim Jannard/Jarred seem like pretty witty guys. I have an image of them in my head trying to use a 2.8 screen, They're not the smallest of guys. Though seriously I can understand 2.8 is a little small but I worry that a 5.0 screen while maybe appropriate for the Epic and pro shooting on the Scarlet seems too big. Some will want that but personally I think its too big. Maybe I have small girly hands ;) but a 3.5 would be fine for me on a scarlet. 3.5 is the size of an iphone and most can use that unless you have banana fingers. To me the fixed Scarlet's strength is for documentary work where you want to be as unobtrusive as possible and a 5.0 screen doesn't help in that goal. It would be great to see how well the LCD screen attaches to the side of the camera like most videocameras do. I don't know what people think or know what options RED have discussed generally about the LCD.

I wonder also if a third party would be a able to produce a compatible screen that works with the Fly By Wire functions, I'm guessing probably not though.

You're not shooting full hd video or SD video like on iPhone, it's 3K format : you need to clearly see if you're on focus and what is going on your LCD.

Agreed. Bigger, clearer, better... bestest :)

5" is not all that big physically. But you can always use and aftermarket LCD. No touch screen functions with that option though, but you have full control with the side handle or Redmote.
I prefer an EVF for low profile doc work anyway.

Is it certain that Red won't expose these functions to third-party developers?

Fair point and I pretty must agree. Though if 2.8 was considered by RED there must be possibilities with a smaller screen basically because so much of the functions can be programed (fly by wire) so you could for more mobile work rely on touch focus. But yeah I do to some degree agree. I would rather as another poster mentioned have an EVF but 'for me' at the moment the EVF is too much money to justify.

Completely agree with you Jim, which is why when I saw this today I got pretty excited:
