They are no longer making the 2.8'' touch screen. Red is still figuring out how to price out the Fixed package...we should know more at NAB.

That looks very interesting indeed. There have been some reports at DVXuser of multiple Cineroid failures, so that one doesn't seem so promising anymore. The EVF needs to be as bullet proof as the camera is likely to be.

Very Cool at a great price point. Will certainly check this out next week.

In theory a 5.0 LCD must add chunk of money to the package as LCD's already sold by RED of similar size are around $1500+ if im not mistaken. Another reason a marginally smaller cheaper LCD would be a good fit for the Fixed. But RED can't make every option imaginable available. I'm guessing if the 5.0 is a reality then thats going to be the LCD with the package. I recognise RED's doing all of us a favour even if they put a 5,000 dollar iPad screen on it so all good really.

*Compared to the RED BOMB EVF that EVF looks pretty massive on the EPIC in the photos. I guess its a budget option.

There may be economies of scale that bring the price of the 5" down as the mfg quantities go up. Think of the significant cost savings to Red of not producing the 2.8" LCD. Not just mfg cost but inventory, sales, QC, packaging, warranty, service support, etc. Fewer items at higher volumes can produce significant cost savings to the whole program. The original proposed Scarlet design sported a flip out 4.8" LCD, so now they are closer to original spec in this regard. One common LCD model that serves across the entire Scarlet/Epic line just makes sense.

Your right. I think when RED decided what it was, ie a Professional Company not a pro consumer one things like 2.8 LCD's got booted. I heard Jannard say that Scarlet was kind of an afterthought to kind of extend the line lower into a budget setup. Thats why really we should be grateful to RED for doing this. I'm no fanboy but I recognise RED is doing us all a favour with the scarlet program. Its unfortunate all these DSLR's came out and mudded the waters for many. To me RED is a pro company reaching down to budget filmakers while the DSLR's are mass produced consumer products trying to reach into the video professional world or at least users are trying to make them do that....saying that I still want a lower profile 3-4 inch screen.

For the lower profile, I think I am going to go with one of the new aftermarket low cost EVF's with a 3" screen and flip up eyepiece. Serve as both EVF and LCD. I used to like that type of finder a lot on the Betacams .

Powered up my Beta camcorder the other day just to see if it still works.
Felt lovely on my shoulder, like an old friend. All the switches in the right place. In a few seconds I was totally familiar and it has been a couple of years since last used.
