Should I have a REDCODE option in Final Cut once I have installed the RED plugin?

Should I be able to import a .R3D file?

Is there a way to get the quicktime wrappers that point to the .R3D files with RedCine or can it only convert to standalone QT files

Ignore this. There is a bug in RedCine that means you can't see all the output options on this iMac 24" which is why I couldn't see RAW as an option.

you can't output to redcode, it's decode only

you can't import R3D straight in FCP, use the QT reference files generated by the camera or by RED ALERT

you can't create reference QT files in REDCINE, it's on the list of features to add though

Is that just for now or forever?

I seem to recall an Apple event where they said we'd be able to edit Redcode natively in FCP. Will we ever be able to import RD3 files into FCP 6, or will we always have to use Redcine? I can't imagine generating QT reference files for an entire feature... Please reassure me that direct import is coming.

I don't think you will be able to inport REDCODE directly to FCP as it needs the QT wrapper. The wrapper contains all the metadata such as ASA. I think the camera will make the QT files automatically in the future.

I should remember that we are very much in Beta land, and a quick, easy workflow will soon present itself. What I really want is my camera, so I can shoot for a day and test.

Also, it's not an issue if the camera makes the QTs for us. We won't need Red Altert to do that, so it's pretty simple.

    1) the camera *already* generates QuickTime files, so you don't have to for a full feature

    2) Final Cut Pro understands only one thing, and that's QuickTime

Editing REDCODE natively means loading the QuickTime wrapper files and FCP having native support *FOR THE CODEC*. That means our codec is RT enabled.

Obviously we continue to evaluate the integration with FCP.

Is that likely always to be the case? Consolidating long takes would certainly be very useful.
