In both project settings window and color settings window the files are black at the bottom of the page, but have color in viewer because I clicked color at the top of page.

Does anyone know if there is a reason why I can't manipulate the color settings?

I just found out that my graphics card is the problem. Maybe yours too. According to Luki from Assimilate
What graphics card and driver are you running? On XP - NVidia Quadro-core is what is recommended, and download the most recent drivers from the NVidia site.

If you're just running integrated mobo gfx on an older computer, things could get unpleasant. Take a look in your logfile close to the top where it has all the info about your gfx config (OpenGL section.) Does everthing say "available," or are there lots of "not available," and other ominous sounding stuff?

That indicates a non compliant video card. Which one are you using?
