  1. #1 RED Schematics
I want to make my own case design and am wondering if RED has released any exterior body schematics I could use as a starting point. I'm assuming the CAD files exist somewhere and doubt a silhouette render would give away too much... The existing RED case doesn't quite work for either of my two needs and I'm trying to avoid pick and pluck.

I'm trying to save myself the time of photoing the camera on measurement grids and such.

Just put it on a sheet of paper and trace it, give that to your case maker.

    Hi Mark,

On the Red Tech Specs page - http://www.red.com/cameras/tech_specs - there are some basic measurements of the bare camera. Obviously you want to have the camera stay partially built, otherwise one of the cases we had available might have satisfied your needs. That is one of the problems with handing out specs, the camera is so user configurable that the specs have to be for how you want to pack your camera away - with rails and top handles etc. There is no pat answer for that. Also a very good reason we didn't really pursue the case market, it is very subjective.

You can always talk to rental houses that you know, that have cases you like - and ask their case suppliers to measure your camera with the accessories you want to leave attached for custom foam cutting. Once I had to actually leave a non working bodies with our custom case people to get the right fit. Sorry that isn't a viable option for any body reading this. Even then if it isn't exactly the same as what you use there can be little hiccups. I don't advise people go through this stage until they have lived and worked with their cameras for a few shoots and take into consideration if it is for your own use solely or also whether you might rent the camera out as well. Needs differ in this regard.

As time goes on there will be many custom case makers with many patterns for RED equipment. If you have any questions PM me.

RED sells a pelican with laser cut foam for around $600. It's got enough spaces for many many items and many RED users have purchased them. Myself, I feel like I will want different items in my default case, so I've been dragging my feet on getting this one. As briferg says... you learn how you want to work too.
