Why are there so many nay-sayers?

Are they just jealous because they didn't reserve a camera?

I'm being serious though, why is it that someone that would never buy this camera or believe in this camera in the first place, go out of their way to naysay , discredit and put down something they know nothing about - Most everyone I talk to about the RED thinks it some joke

There are a large number of people who are already "on the inside" to whom owning a camera simply isn't a necessity and the existence of RedOne won't necessarily make a difference, mostly those who have access to shooting on 35mm film.

Then there are those who simply don't like shooting digital because to them it takes away part of the purity of the movie, especially adding effects to the digital acquisition in post.

After that you have people who are stuck up their own nogosunshineplace because... well who knows. It's the people who shouldn't be annoyed about good inventions that gets me the most. I think they simply dislike the mentality of people who are actually enthusiastic about change, and scoff at anyone who might not have as much experience as they do, looking forward to a digital acquisition that could help them to make seriously good pieces of art. It's a shame and even more so when you consider they will likely be using this camera, or a similar one spawned from its introduction onto the market, in the near future.

Stage 2: Denial - This happened at last year's NAB
Stage 3: Anger - This happened when the IBC footage showed
Stage 4: Bargaining - This happened when the reservations closed
Stage 5: Acceptance - This'll happen on April 16th.

I did a shoot the other day with my $6,000 HD camera.
And we also did some timelapse with my Nikon D200.
The client was remarking how much clearer the picture was
coming from the still camera. We were shooting
1 fps at only HD res. Pop the frames in AE and
render out a QuickTime .mov.
I told them wait until the end of this year and
our "video" will be as clean if not cleaner
than the still photo timelapses

haha yep.

Trying to match my HVX footage up against my DLSR timelapse footage made the DLSR footage look fives time more crisp and awesome when both run at 720p. I can't wait for a motion-picture digital camera that will actually smoke my Canon 350D DLSR. :)

I know what you mean. I have a few friends that are hating the red idea. One of the reasons being is that they both have alot invested in Betacams, switchers, decks, etc. They hate the fact that times are changing and that they need to start updating before there left out in the cold. But at the same time I can understand what they mean by "It's to good to be true". I'm a firm believer that Red will revolutionize the industry. Even though there isn't much to view at the moment. We'll just have to wait for NAB!

Red is a paradigm shifting product. For the first time ever any creative person with modest (in production terms) resources will be able to produce images on par with the best in the industry, and own the cam and post the footage him/herself. The real democritization of high quality film will come when the majority of theaters start projecting digitally, but this is fundementally changing the landscape and taking the primary advantage away from those producers/diectors who can easily raise millions to make crap and exclude those who are necessarily restricted to lower quality formats by budget. The wall is comming down and that scares those who are sitting on it. Humpty Dumpty must die!
