BWAHAHA awesome! Updated the front page - thank you.

I love how they even interviewed an editor from Conan (who were FCP guys, but after their last video I'm not sure how long they will be :)

FCP was a great tool because it was intuitive and easy to set up and get going. but Avid has very complex tools that do a lot of things, integral to a post production environment that involves a lot of moving parts, software, hardware, etc. From broadcast to hollywood, as much as the argument that other NLE's are getting dominant, Avid is still the most trusted NLE for some of the biggest jobs. A lot of major tv networks are still all avid based, and hollywood still uses it a lot too. Just because they are features that mean nothing to you or the way you work, doesn't mean it isn't integral for other productions. When you have a TV episode with a 1 week turn around, something like "script sync" is gonna save you a ton of time organizing your clips. I've used it, it's awesome.

not to mention that Avid has always been good with their legacy products, older avid systems can still open modern avid projects within a certain level. I had a friend who handed off a fcp 7 project to someone at the CW, and they couldn't open it because they were still running FCP 6 there.

there are a lot of good unique things about avid, and just because it's not typically a freelancer's home user's cup of tea, doesn't lesson the product. I'm really excited for a lot of these new features, and if anything all this stuff on the horizon makes this so much easier for this to be a substitute for FCP because FCP X is just something I"m really not getting into. And just a side not about getting to cutting the story. award winning editors have won working on fcp and avid over the years. it's not the NLE, it's the editor. the NLE is just a enabler for their creativity, and that in the end is just about who you are.
Good post. I'm not counting FCPX out completely -- but if I'm putting time into another NLE right now, many of the things you listed are exactly why I would go with Avid.

    Hey,

I watched the video of the event. AVID was smart to go to Hollywood. That is where there massive foothold and a very specific segment of the editing market. It will be nice to see the 64 bit version on a MAC. it's so funny to hear AVID talk about openness. That marks a huge culture shift.

Haha, awesome! Makes sense now :) I was kinda hoping you'd read some interesting SIGGRAPH math paper about a perfect mathematical model for color conversion or something... for a while I thought you meant ColorSync but then ColorSync uses LUTs anyway. Personally I just like the idea of having software that doesn't try to do anything automagically for you. Just give it support for input LUTs (to convert various sources into your unified working colorspace) and display LUTs (to display your timeline image as accurately as possible on your monitors) and I'd be happy.

Didn't Avid get a complete management change in 2009? Which would kinda explain why everything has changed so much recently. I mean, when new management came in, Avid:
    - became RED-friendly
    - canned Xpress DV, cut the price of Media Composer from $4995 to $2495, and offered a $500 upgrade from Xpress DV to Media Composer
    - got Pro Tools and Media Composer able to run on the same computer
    - got Pro Tools to open up to any audio device and gave us cheaper surround sound mixing options without ProTools HD
    - similarly begun to open up Media Composer to all 3rd party devices
    - MichaelP devoted his life to helping us on Reduser

I am 100% with you on the problems of Avid of old. Before 2009 I would use their systems at work - there were a lot of good things but the general attitude of the company meant that I refused to give them a cent of my personal money! But after they did that whole "we are listening" thing and THEN followed up... meanwhile Apple was still not bothering to fix gamma bugs or offer any kind of roadmap, while Premiere didn't even support dual-system sound or offer a high-quality compressed workflow (why they never bought Cineform is beyond me), I decided "hey maybe out of all of the editorial software companies, this is the one that I should get behind because they are the only ones actually making an attempt to serve my needs." So I bought a copy of Xpress DV from Jaagdy on Reduser, upgraded it to Media Composer for $500 and... profit?

    Bruce,

All kidding aside in this thread. I really appreciate this explanation. I had no idea about all of these recent changes. Indeed the management tram who spoke at the event came off as genuine.

    It's worth taking another look.

I'm also waiting for Lightworks on a mac.

    Thanks again.

    David.

It's not so recently, I've been trying to convince people that Avid is a good choice for some time now, but they seem to need a kick in the groin by Apple before realizing how abusive that father really is. Now when I say Avid is a good choice they just sit in silence.
