  1. #1 hdrx epic footage transcoding
    Hello everybody
for the first time I'm working on epic hdrx footage. what I need to do is: convert the r3d into one or more files with a lower resolution (2k), but keeping the full latitude of the r3d file. I did some tests but I'm not sure what to do. the best option would be 2 split the 2 hdrx streams and encode them in 2 separate files, or alternatively find a format that supports the whole range of information. I tried cineform raw, linear dpx etc but none of them seems to keep all the informations i see in redcine (if I move the slider). what's the issue?

    Thank you very much

It's quite the problem as of today.

If you want to work on post leaving the r3d format (going dpx, tiff...) you will loose something. The way to blend efficiently the A and X track in a type of LOG file is not yet available without pushing the noise of the X track and clipping the highlight using the A track (using the "opacity" slider of REDCINE-x).

I don't know if Resolve 8 improoved the merging of the two layers by using different type of key's?

REDCINE-X will surely evolve to take advantage of A and X tracks in the future so that we can handle HDRx daylies.

what about exporting 2 clips with different exposures from redcinex? one for highlights and one for the other?

Did you find a solution? I'm lost as well, using the slider i can crate a nice looking image... but when exported even to R3D it doesn't keep all the information I'm seeing.
I tried using Resolve, but all I got is the lite version... I'm trying to figure out what to do with the HDRx files next week, after I shoot some commercials, is it usable at all?

    I would definitly say YES.

You have to take as much care to choose the right exposure settings for the x track as for the a track (use the less compensation as possible).

Magic motion emprooves the results obtained with HDRx by a lot. But very shaky movements still can contain a bit of motion artefact.

To save the settings of a clip that your treat in Redcine-X you have to select in the preferences of Redcine-x : General/automatically save RMD files.

You can get a little guidance from here. It is a Scratch webminar but the foundations are the same with any system.

    Guys,

Is there a quick and easy way to convert R3Ds to an x264 encoded file, besides FCP, PP CS5.5?
Just want to convert the file to MOV/MP4/MKV with x264 encoding, for easy viewing on my PC.

RCX only offers export to XML and EDL files. RCX doesn't seem to have any video conversion capability (besides a single frame TIFF snapshot).
I don't have a Red Rocket, so those R3Ds really take their toll on my humble PC, and play really choppy in RCX, even in 1/8 setting.

    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

    In Redcine x

In the left where you find browser/bin you have an export Tab. Open it, create a new setting, choose the codec (QT,R3D,DNxHD...), debayer quality and other stuff.

Then make your changes to the clip image/framing... apply either to the viewer or the whole bin

Export using the created export preset.

The thing is, this is my first time using Redcine X, I never had the need, I did all my Grading in Apple Color...

So I don't know how to use it, and the footage is not mine, I downloaded an HDRx file from another thread here.
I don't even know how to see the A and X track, it's only 1 file, but I can activate HDR Blend, and in the player inside Redcine X I see all the extra dynamic range, I just don't know how to export the blended tracks, or what I'm seeing in the player to a grading software like Resolve....

I'm just testing some workflows, I supposedly can mix the HDRx on Resolve, but I can't test it here, because in the lite version you can't have more than 2 nodes and the layer mixing nodes are disabled.

I guess I'll have to wait till I'm at the Resolve suite.

I just wanted to know a usable Redcine X workflow for working with HRDx files.

Well... REDCINE-X is intuitive but it will be difficult for me to explain through a thread how to work with it.

A and X track are the both stream recorded in a HDRx clip. You have the choise either not to use the X track or to apply a simple blend or to use the Magic motion wich makes a different and better "blend" between the both tracks.

I think you can find some video tutorials.

    Try it.
