Well I THOUGHT I had an answer.. I was going to get a MAC, work of a network drive.. Edit on Adobe Premiere on my beloved PCs and then just import the project into Resolve off a MAC.

No such luck. Resolve only works on QT files.. Not AVIs.. But I HATE HATE HATE quicktime.

Convert to DPX first? Scene detection works pretty well in Resolve, so you could just export your whole edit and then use scene detection or an EDL to get going in resolve.

You could also try making quicktime reference movies, not fully converting, but that might not make for good performance in Resolve.

Jay, if you stick with Avid and Adobe, Quicktime actually works quite well!
We have ZERO gamma issues between Media Composer and After Effects, etc.
Most of the real madness occurs when you get Final Cut Pro involved.

BTW - what codec are you gonna be working in?

For me it is easy - DNxHD which is free with Avid and awesome - but you are using Cineform maybe? Isn't there a rewrapper from AVI to MOV?

Or just bypass Quicktime and use MXF files with Avid, which DaVinci can load with a $500 license (I wish it were zero, but at least DNxHD is free to read and write on both PC and Mac).

definitely use frame sequences... tif, dpx, or exr

you don't want avi or quicktime

or there's also those crazy files called r3d's...

Why "wish list" ? Resolve already does this.

    $495.

Which takes the cost of DaVinci up to a whopping $1500 or so.

Still the deal of the decade if you ask me.

Hmm thanks but I blew the budget on the Avid Artist Color already :(
Bruce Im just learning Resolve and found a few free tutorials online.
Before I hurt myself, can I export XML/EDL from Avid MC (used AMA with R3D files) and import into Resolve 8?
    Thanks in advance :)

Yes, DaVinci has always worked brilliantly with Avid - for decades. Resolve supports Avid AAF files (their equivalent of XML) directly.

BTW, the MXF thing is just a bonus. It just makes things more streamlined if you're going back and forth.

Even without MXF option, you still have a better workflow than anything else under $10,000 today - and better than anything 10 years ago!
