Wow, is this not the greatest thing ever? It's so awesome to have an opportunity to be able to be a part of CampRED and do so many things that I love to do.
(1) Shooting with all the EPICs I can possibly use at any single time.
(2) Showing kids (who have just as high of an energy level as me) RED workflow, and how to use the limited knowledge I have acquired.
(2) Sharing fellowship with the great staff which somehow always comes standard when it comes to any event in which RED puts on.
I was speaking with some of the counselors over the weekend of what they thought of RED and the camp overall. Their response was "I think it's very neat to see how at this camp, there really isn't a hierarchy in which there's the RED employees at the top, others involved in the camp staff, and then the campers themselves. Any camper has the ability to approach Ted throughout the camp and freely ask any question."
I totally get what they mean. When I first started getting involved with RED on a more personal level, Ted showed that there is no "class" of people in the industry in which they will favor one over another because of one's accomplishments or status in the industry. When Ted makes snowcones for the 50 campers + staff, it's not for the pictures being taken. It's because of his heart for the filmmaking industry (and its future). What we might think are the "small" things, for that reason, they are the things that will stick out as the really big things.
It's great to have several EPICs, a studio, a 40ft screen and a 4K projector to screen a 9 year old's dailies. That's costs a lot of money.
It's great to have people like Ted, Jim, and many others who've even flown cross-country to pour into a young kid's life. That's priceless...

Hi,
I'm one of the counselors in training on 2011' Camp RED held in Los Angeles, RED STUDIOS Hollywood. I came from Prague for Camp RED. I'm in LA for whole 3 weeks of Camp RED. First of all, I think this is a brilliant idea and amazing oportunity for kids. Ted told a story how he got the whole camp idea, that was nice. The first week was cool! The first monday was hard but we learned a lot the first day.. and it's getting better and better. As counselor in training we are here actually to learn how the stuff works etc. Of course after Rique, Ted, Brian and all the other RED staff, the head cunselors are in charge of everything that is going on during the camp around kids. Well [Most of the time] these counselors are film school students or just someone that helps with the kids around.. I was interested in Camp RED because I do study a motion picture in Prague and I'm huge fan of RED! I had no connections in RED so just a few days after they post the Camp RED thingy here on reduser, I e-mailed Brian.. Of course I'm too young to be a counselor, but I wanted to be prepared so I learned everything about the RED ONE and the EPIC, all the technical stuff, calibrations, settings and basicaly I have the whole EPIC-M firmware "virtualized" in my head.. :-) (without having the EPIC available) and when I got an e-mail from Rique that I'm in, I was so happy! That was it, one of these dream-came-true situations! Beside the technicall stuff, the filming skills, I of course learned in school in Prague.. Well I don't know about the other CITs, but what I was able to see, few of these guys/girls aren't that much into filmmaking, but that's cool.. I just hope they are able to appreciate the opportunity to be around this pro gear (and amazing pro filmmakers!) - but I think they are. CITs are learning. We can't do much (actually we can, but the counselors and the professionals are doing good here, but we definetly should [well I do] learn new things!) during the day, of couse we are helping the counselors whole day and we are making sure the kids are fine and have a good time during the day at camp. That's fun. :) Btw. counselors are amazing, they are doing an awesome job! (For second week, I'm in group with Emma and she is awesome with these kids!:)) Maybe I'm crazy, but I felt like I really should learn all the RED specific technical stuff, so I did. For young filmmakers like me it's huge opportunity to talk with amazing people on set (Thanks to Marcus - most amazing guy around lights, for teaching me so much things during the camp RED)! I think every CIT should "take advantage" of this :-) (if you are actually interested in this!) you know what I mean.. and also learn totally new stuff like the 3ALITY 3D filming with two RED ONEs and the cool 3D rig.. That was awesome! And all these people, for example from 3ALITY, are so generous to explain everything and that's totally amazing - so I thank you for this! I had chance talk to guys from Adobe about interesting things.. (where film student can talk to all these people from Hollywood filmmaking world?!).. and the best thing.. to be around this outstanding pro gear like the new EPIC, RED ONE and all the other tech stuff in RED STUDIOS..(Like Ted said - "There is no other camp like this in the world!") ... and have RED snowcones :-)).. I was totally amazed by the end-of-the-week 4K screening for parents and friends (I think nobody expected THAT big crowd) on that giant screen, that was amazing experience for everyone there:) and fun for everybody there..still.. there will be the third week in camp in Malibu - and I think it will be blast!
Last week we did a cool music video with a piano player/singer, I'll try to finish the post production tomorrow, so we can see it on the giant screen on friday! The campers did an awesome job on camera, lights and all other stuff during filming this.
One more time: Thanks to Ted (btw. your super-excited daughter is just amazing!:-)), Brian, Rique, all RED STUDIOS people, 3ALITY people, the profesional filmmakers on Camp RED, and all the others and of course Jim Jannard for making the first Camp RED possible! -- And I'm looking forward to next year!! :-)

it was great to be there with you and the other campers/counselors last week. Seeing all you guys diving into the cameras and tech so effortlessly was nothing short of inspiring.
Wish I could be there this week :'(

Jason, thanks for helping out around the music video (and around all music videos) last week! It was so great! These shots we got are really amazing.
