shooting quad hd on on epic, 5:1 compression. doing rocket encodes to prores hq 1080p, and it's 2-3x slower than real time. just had a r1 shoot yesterday transcoding at faster than real time, can't really even play back in real time in RCX, build 470. is it the lower compression that is slowing things down, or does my rocket have issues now? if it's cause of the lower compression, gonna have to think about a dual rocket setup to get these encodes faster now...

8 core mac pro 2.93 ghz

    16 gb ram

    rocket in 8x slot

encoding from esata drive straight to internal 5 bay raid.

Sounds like your card has issues. I've been playing back 5K 5:1 footage in realtime and encoding about 1.2 - 1.5:1 since June in both Resolve 8 and RCX. Of course, had to install a second rocket to play back HDRx files in realtime.

plays back and transcodes r1 files just fine, no issues at all. tried playing the epic quad hd files off my raid, same issues, choppy playback and 1 minute of footage takes a little over 2 to encode. something is very strange here, even switched to build 487 with the same issues. can anybody shoot off some quad hd footage at 5:1 compression to see if they have the same problem? i feel like this is way too slow for just quad hd, and the compression shouldn't be an issue of people are getting 5k at real time playback...

Your source drive might not be fast enough to keep up with realtime.

playing for a raid, with read speed of over 400 mb/sec. I just shot off some 5k FF files at 5:1 compression, and playback is fine, quad hd chokes up rcx, and is massively slower in the transcode, even compared to 5k...

is there any solution for this? i'm open to all possibilities, but playing off SSD, and even off a 5 bay raid 0, quad hd off an epic plays really choppy, and encodes are really long. i have old quad hd footage on my system, plays back and encodes fine, and we just shot off some 5k ff, 5:1 and it plays back and encodes fine... is the rocket and rcx just not optimized for epic red code at quad hd yet? or is something else going on here? this really makes no sense to me.

and no we can't just go ahead and shoot 5k, we are using a 24-290 without the fix to cover full 5k and production needs to use the full range of the lens for what they are shooting, so they decided on quad hd so they don't see any vingetting.

latest everything. again, i reinterate. 5k playbacks and transcodes are fine. r1 all flavors transcodes and playback are fine. but it's slow as balls and choppy ass playback at quad hd off an EPIC. it's still chugging along and I should have been done quite awhile ago... i hope there is a answer/solution to this soon.
