Is this problem related to LTO-5 media only ... or to LTO-5 drives in general?
Are we safer if making LTO-4 tapes in a LTO-5 unit?

My unit is IBM, but I think most units use the same hardware inside.

This is an issue with LTO-5 media only and it affects all drives. We've not seen issues with any vendor's LTO-4 media, so if LTO-4 gives you the capacity that you require, you will be safe. Otherwise, the media that we sell is verified to be the new, smoother formula HP-branded LTO-5 media.
