nice!
Anybody compared the Canon 85mm 1.2 to the Samyang (aka Rokinon, Walimex etc.) 85mm 1.4?
I'm curious about the bokeh in particular, since I like that very much in the Samyang. Canon claims great bokeh because of a a round aperture, but as we all know, that's not the only factor for a great bokeh. Is the bokeh busy when stopped down (which is depending on correction of the spherical aberration)?
But then the focus control of the Canon is quite attractive in this typical portrait length, even for the much higher price …
How bad does it breathe ?
Plus, what about the 85mm 1.8 ?
The 85 1.2 is hands down the best Canon mount lens. Period. Sharpness even at 1.2 is superb, bokeh is superb. Sure, it's expensive (albeit cheap by cine standards), but it's worth it. Focus speed is limited by internal motors however (no truly manual focus) so no way to do a quick cranked rack (although it's not too bad, just not mega-quick as you can with a manual cranked pull.)
Evin did a nice run down of various pieces of glass.

The Canon 70-200mm was better received than the 85mm. I haven't use either but it's a good place to start if your considering which glass to buy.

Sorry, but that link is sending me in circles. Would you mind posting the right one to Evin's run down?
TIA
yeah I see, it's jumping to Jarreds Canon mount post.
Weird the forum is acting buggy, or my computer.
Go find the "Lens Tests" toward the bottom of the main forum page. It's in the "Shooting Red" section. Just below "Audio"
Look for the stick at the top called "SALT II results...."
BAM, your in. Sorry about the screwy link.
Thanks, it works for me by copy and paste in the browser…
Great test, thank you, Evin!
I don't typically post without something specific to say.....but.....read and absorb what Rob said in his post. It's inarguable, accurate and you'll regret anything else you do in comparison. Interesting thing is...I'm a Nikon shooter....(but I use the 85 1.2L on my Epic).
Is the programmable focus pull functionality enabled at this stage? (set point A & point B, set pull duration, push hotkey to execute focus pull). I remember a video RED posted quite some time ago showing it in action.
Sorry if this has been answered already - I made it through 60 pages of this thread and thought it would be quicker just to ask :)
