I'm wondering if E-SATA + USB 3 + Thunderbolt wouldn't be the best Gen 2 approximation of the current E-SATA + USB 2 + FW800. No idea what that would do to prices, though...

Thunderbolt! But make sure it has at least 2 Thunderbolt connections for daisy-chaining. Matrox really disappointed many with their MXO2 adapter that has only one Thunderbolt port, and same with Blackmagic Design with their Ultra Studio 3D, which makes no sense at all.
I dunno... The Sonnet adapter looks like a good solution. I've already pre-ordered one. I have a couple ExpressCard adapters and certain media that I'd like to use with my new 15" MBP.... They do get a thumbs-down though for not including a second TB port for daisy-chaining. I'm starting to wish that Intel would have made that a requirement in the spec! But yeah, a direct TB to eSATA solution can't get here soon enough. :)
Hey guys, my first post here. (=
i'd think the sonnet adapter would be a good buy, as i'm a heavy user of their express cards, esata, fw800, etc, and they have never failed me.
my 2 cents.
Mac plus thunderbolt.
Yes, Thunderbolt and Mac. Please don´t put time on USB until you got the TB working. Much more future proof.
Thunderbolt
thunderbolt first USB 3 after (Mac person here)
I use both mac and pc for work. So there's no bias here. I think it'd be smartest to implement usb 3.0 (in place of 2.0) and thunderbolt (in place of firewire), while keeping esata.
It future proofs the design, and once the whole mess of 3rd party support gets sorted out, RED will still have an outstanding product with no need for a redesign.
I currently run my red station through esata.
Also are there TB to usb 3.0 adapters out there? That could solve the debate in a flash.
