I've got a kid I'm mentoring, his Dad is locked up and his Mom was just deported to Mexico. He really likes tinkering with and fixing junk. Electrical, mechanical, whatever. He's a good kid but it is really easy for kids in this situation to get into stuff they ought not. Help me keep this kid busy and out of trouble! So PM me if you any junk you might otherwise be throwing away. I'll certainly pay shipping on it.

    Thanks guys,

    -Andrew

    Computers too?

Sorry to hear about his parents, shit that sounds rough for a kid... Tell us more about the mentoring part if you're up to it, I just finished a project with seven kids that were from tough backgrounds and it's great to see them rise up and shine again.

Mainly right now I've just been meeting with him, making sure he's staying out of trouble. My wife has been picking him up from school pretty regularly. He isn't the best student in the academic sense, so I've been working with him a bit on school but also trying to find some technical school stuff as a post high school option (he's only a sophomore in high school, so he's got some time). I've never really done this sort of thing so I'm kinda playing it by ear, if you will. But yeah, he's fixed a bunch of odds and ends around my house (An Xbox, a weedeater, lawn mower, and a couple other little pieces of electronic kit) and I'm running out of stuff for him to play with!

    Admirable thing you're doing Andrew!

Maybe try and get him some work in a computer or car repair place? Or a machinist - sounds very technically minded. Or even apprentice work with car manufacturers - combine electronic and mechanical skills?
