Alfred Russel Wallace, a guy who thought outside the box, and was a force in creating two separate sciences... the science of evolution, and what would eventually be called plate tectonics or continental drift.
Not only did he independently come up the theory of Natural Selection (Darwin might have used much of his theory to fill in the gaps of his own and became a bigger star), and his work in Bio geography which became the basis for continental drift. Man, it's one thing to be the first (or co-first) to say we evolved from apes, but to also say that continents moved is unparalleled. What is more surprising is how few people know of his work. It makes inventing the computer mouse look... well mouse like to a giant.
