EPIC owners need not worry. It's a lot of camera for the $$ but there certainly are some compromises for the reduced price, some of which may not be apparent to many.

Sorry if this has been covered already, but I simply do not have time to read through 50 pages of comments.

But what is the crop factor for 4k on this thing? I think it's a little misleading (heh... or amazing marketing. You decide.) that RED is claiming that it's an S35 sensor. Yes, I know technically it is... and for 5k stills... it is also. But MOST people are going to be buying this camera for 4k motion. It is not an S35 sensor at that point.

Can someone point me to data that states the crop factor for each resolution? Thanks a million.



p.s. I'm not trying to bash. I LOVE this camera and it's a lot more camera than I was expecting. I was at the announcement event yesterday and loved how Jim took control of the situation. It's just a massive pill I'm still trying to swallow after waiting for this camera for 3 years.

What makes a $100 Pentium 2.8ghz CPU different then a $1000 Pentium 3.2ghz CPU.? they usually come out of the same oven...

AMD did the same thing with cores. The 3-core AMD chips are 4-core chips that did not meet the bar.

I remember the rumors back around NAB. They apparently completely scrapped the Scarlet program. The 8x zoom and compact primes are gone with the 2/3" sensor. It's a shame, really. That would have been a pretty interesting system.

This camera seems like an oddity to me. The data rates seem to severely limit it. And weren't we expecting an "Epic-S" soon for just a couple of thousand more than this that use the same sensor and offer higher data rates? Has that program been cancelled, as well?

If you remember, few years ago, that was all Scarlet..2/3: fixed , interchangeable, then S35 and so on. So, in essence, they only scrapped Scarlet 2/3 , but not Scarlet S35 that eventually became 4K. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it until someone proves me wrong (that is usually very quickly ;)
