The very real reality at the moment is the industry, the motion picture industry that Red markets and caters towards, is moving towards 4k. Also large sensor cameras have been more desirable for the majority of interchangeable systems.

Red made a very, very good decision by making the Scarlet X 4k and with it's current sensor size.

As mentioned above, you can shoot at 3k just fine on the Scarlet X if that was your target resolution workflow.

Dragon btw, is a very logical step into making a wonderful 4k debayer of a 5k S35 image with the promise of more latitude as well. Hence being a true(r) film alternative.

Technological advancement is progressive. Red doesn't like to go backwards.

If you feel that way, and it is a valid argument, then vote with your wallet and get a BMD camera.

If enough people do and RED thinks they are losing sales to it, then maybe they will do something.

My feeling is that RED feels there is no going backwards now.

Yep I think the BM camera is exactly the reason why Red shouldn't make a S16 sensor. Imagine where they would be right now if they had.

As well Kineraw and the Digital Bolex are coming online soon, this surely will saturate this market segment even more. Whilst I understand the desire by some to have Red wade into this territory, I personally believe it would be a lousy business decision given current trends in camera design.

P.S. Peter there are so many camera choices right now, not all of them have to be Red, or Arri for that matter.

Because a used RED ONE MX would blow it out of the water!

    Actually ....

Used RED ONE Mysteriums and MXs totally ROCK!

What a deal for Indie Start-ups!

The two things I worry about when buying used R1s is, a few years down the road will Red still carry parts to repair them if need be. Going by the love R1 users are getting now (or complete lack there of) I would say good luck with that. And two, looking at the trend of prices I would be concerned of whether or not you could get anything out of it resale wise after you are done with it. I mean In half a year used R1 prices have dropped $5-10k. For being such amazing cameras they don't seem hold their value at all. It would be like a beater car, once you get it, you just run that POS until it explodes. lol

Not talking bad about RED, but they are not a big enough company to have been able to adequately supply a prosumer market right now.

What you're supposed to do, is just go and make a movie with it! And then make a better movie with it. And then ..... you get the idea. If someone says, "Your RED ONE is depreciating", just answer, "Quiet on the set, I'm making a movie!". There will be parts for Ten years .... in worst case scenario, just buy another used RED ONE. Come to think of it, RED has a lot of Stage III RED ONES!

The original RED isn't doing badly considering it's age.

Look at other cameras that launched at the same time - or even ones from 2 years ago... and see how they have kept their value (in comparison).

PL/Cine lenses are the best bet if you want to preserve/appreciate an investment ;)

Regarding a 3K Scarlet... RED made the logical choice to focus on S35.

Consider the new users that are getting to grips with RAW and RED now... then multiply that by XXX if the camera was cheaper/more prosumer in price range (or another cheaper model came ie 3K)... it's a market that just isn't worth it (IMO) as there's the law of diminishing returns that comes into play.

The 3K fixed would have been nice... but, as others have said the 2K market with Ikonoskop, Digital Bolex & Black Magic (etc) is just going to get very busy and cluttered... better RED ignore it and keep focused on S35 and beyond.

With competition ready to deliver almost 3K for $3K solution (I see you, BMD) resurrection of that lil scarlet could've been very appropriate move, but it's up to Red guys to decide. I understand that they now focusing on 4K+ digital cinema only, still 3K Scarlet with interchangeable lens mount and pricing around the point of $6K might be awesome, and in that case I'm not sure I'd prefer cheaper Blackmagic 2,5K RAW camera (their Canon lens mount is still too funky for me, especially comparing it to Reds).
