  1. #1 Considering RED
    Hi,
I'm considering buying RED next week... at least getting in the line..
But before that, I'm also considering other options from Thomson, Silicon Imaging, etc.. To tell the truth, RED's super35 sensor and modular design impresses me but I need some answers before deciding:
(and I believe the technical specs page on red.com is really weak and not enough - you even have to search through the forum to find out which input/output ports are available on the camera, power consumption, etc...)

    - Specs on shutter (180-degree film shutter equivalent with variable speed control?)
    - ISO options?
    - What is the true ISO sensitivity at 0db?
    - is there any time lapse options?
    - Signal to Noise ratio details?
    - I know there were issues about operating temperatures and fixed eventually.. But no exact (official) specs on these temperatures yet (in terms of degrees)...
    - Body dimensions? (just curious)
    - If I order now, I'll get a red number like #3000.. I saw Jim's posts before; telling that cameras 101-200 would be sent on 20th of November and 201-600 on 10th of December. Don't know if they arrived yet.. And I know the company targets 500 cameras a month but things change... So, What is the estimate for a new customer with a red number over 3000? I need to know this for production planning.

    thanks

    iso : 250-320
it doesnt matter to which iso (100, 500, 800, 1000) you set your camera, because its all metadata

temperature: jim booted the cam succesfully at around - 20 Celsius.

time lapse: asfaik there are no options

order now: get it in 6-8 months

    Sorry, have to say that,

I would start planning RED shoots when I actually get the camera, things are still pretty much subject to change.

But i believe the delays are worth it and the 6-8 month waiting period is realistic.

    Merry Christmas.

    I mean... whatever :sorcerer:.

The camera can shoot at 1fps, not sure if it can be set to shoot 1 frame every x second though for long time lapse. Shouldn't be too hard to do in post of course.

Time lapse will most likely show up in a future firmware update, at least that´s the impression I´ve got after living in this forum (and others) for almost 2 years...

I have to agree with my Bulgarian comrade here.
The delays and the waiting period will be worth the wait, but I wouldn't dream of pouring the concrete into the planning mold until I had the camera in my hands and had spent a little time mastering the workflow.

I heard the timelapse thing will be added later, too.

Also, for about $100 you can get a remote for a Canon DSLR that controls it and allows it to shoot exposures at any intervals you set. Bring those frames into Adobe After Effects and you can easily render out a timelapse sequence. I use it with my 20D (8.2 megapixels). It produces huge RAW frames, which I color correct in Adobe Lightroom (adjust one, then copy the settings to the other frames).

I master the video I output in 1080p, but of course the Canon frames are much larger than that. This allows me to zoom, pan, and reframe the shots while the timelapse plays. Very cool.

Also, if you have a production coming up before you get your RED, you can always rent. Adding the price of rental for a feature shoot with the price of buying your own RED is still cheaper than most of the competition, and it's so much prettier. Then, when your RED arrives, you are extremely familiar with it (except, by then, it will have more upgrades and features, since it's constantly getting better).

You're right Paul but for example,
if you want to get a 300 frames of time-lapse effect; (1 frame per minute)
you need to shoot for 5 hours - that means you have to deal with a huge footage in the post.
But the true reason is; what if you need a full day time-lapsed footage?
you have to replace the disk every x hours and; will get a footage I personally can't deal with :meh:
I hope they enable it in the near future..

Time lapse is in the build I am testing... works great.
