For those of our friends in Denver, we will be doing a workflow demonstration at the Denver Final Cut Pro Users group on December 14th at 6pm MST.
We are also working on a live UStream version for our friends to watch internationally.

The demo will cover the basics of working offline in Prores. We're excited to share our insights with the crowd and Denver and help Reducate the West!

Would love to see all of you there.

Pretty ironic doing the demo at FCPUG in light of FCP not being able to work with Epic images directly, like Media Composer or Premiere:-)
Yes, I understand, that you'll be using Prores proxies, but then why Epic only? Wouldn't then this workflow apply to any red camera?

You gotta wonder why directors as big as David Fincher choose to work with 720P H.264 files for offline instead of 4K files:

Editing The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo - Post Magazine

I think his post staff understands that speed and efficiency is much more important than seeing a 4K image this early in the editorial process. I don't think using ProRes HD proxies for most of the decision-making is a compromise at all, especially if they're done right and the monitoring is accurate.

Only towards the end of the process did they conform the 4K files -- assuming the magazine article is correct. Dealing with 483 hours of footage -- at any resolution -- is a lot of trouble. There's also 1000 visual effects in that film that they couldn't keep as R3D files; they used 4K DPX instead.

    Thanks Marc :)

We do enjoy online for some smaller projects, but offline still makes a lot of sense depending on what programs the project will be touched by, and especially longer form work.

h.264 is easier to transfer half way around world than Prores.

quick update: We've got the technology figured out, the Ustream live video feed is a go!

We even figured out how to switch between video and screen sharing (on a free account nonetheless).

    Hope to see everyone,
