I am going to get my epic in a week but now i am thinking if it is worth it over the scarlet. The differences are not to major between the 2 cameras in my opinion. (except 5k, hdrx and slow motion). Can you please convince me why should I keep the epic over the scarlet. Epic costs 3x times more.
Will red make epic even better then scarlet in future? is the scarlet is going to get the dragon sensor also?
What other major differences the cameras have? Does anybody have a comparison list?

    Thank you.

I was going to buy the Scarlet and decided to wait for Epic stage 4. The differences are fairly significant, at least for what I do. But the Scarlet has everything one needs for a feature film production. Its, like a fellow Reduser posted in another thread, the camera that is going to truly revolutionize the industry.

The Epic is the camera for those that need fast frame rates, HDR and 5K APS-H recording. The Scarlet is for those that are happy with Red One MX like performance (Which was one of the standards of high end TVC and Film production.)

I went Epic because I shoot a lot of high speed. Its part of my cinematic language. And in picture quality its the top of the ladder. 5K aps-H vs 4K APS-C is still a significant difference. And don't forget different compression settings for both cameras. Its like Comparing the road version of a Porsche 911 to a racing spec Porsche 911 GT3.

As far as I know both cameras have the same compression. in that sense they are the same. If you shoot 4K 24fps with both cameras you should get the same quality image don't you? The only difference epic will make is only 5k Hdr mode.

Scarlet's 5k mode only shoots to 12 fps.

The reasons stated are big differences.

3:1 compression is a big deal. 5k is a big deal. 96FPS in 5k is a HUGE deal....

The Epic is 3x the camera the SCarlet is.... but its also three times the price. Comparing a 9k body to a 35k body is unfair. Compare similar feature sets. The Scarlet and F3, C300. The Epic and well.... What else thats purchaseable right now? Alexa, which doesnt do high frame rates? F65 isnt out yet...? Feel safe in your investment.

You should never have any remorse about a tool for business. If its the right purchase there should be no remorse. If you feel remorse, perhaps consider a different option.

In my opinion, EPIC is simply the most versatile digital cinema cameras on the market, and the Scarlet isn't. EPIC's technical specs allow you as a storyteller to have the widest gamut of options for each step of the shooting process including the range in resolutions, framerates, compression ratios, dynamic range, etc. The Scarlet does a lot of things very well, and in some cases just as well as the EPIC; but it doesn't have the amazing flexibility in everything the EPIC has in the above categories. If were planning on shooting your EPIC in 4K HD 24p all the time, then Scarlet is probably the way to go. It's all in what you need and the budget you have to get there.

Dragon sensor will be available for Scarlet, but cost more. I also assume like the MX sensor now, the Scarlet won't be able to shoot full frame with its more limited processing power.

See in my opinion HDR function and the 5K is not worth to pay 3x more, I am sorry but that is my opinion.

isn't scarlet doing 3:1 compression also?

Will dragon sensor available be available for scarlet also, that will make the cameras even more similar.
Is it confirmed that the upgrade price will be be more for scarlet then for epic?
