  1. #1 EPIC Noise/Grain
I just shot a piece in DC that was lit well however even under good lighting conditions, dark suits or jackets have a lot of noise or grain in them. Blacks have lots of noise. Any ideas? Never had this on my RED ONE MX.
    I'm on software Build_2_v2.0.2

    Hi Lee

Would you mind posting the meta data for one of your problem clips?

Very curious. Red has somewhat noisy blacks but I've always liked the grain structure, snap crackle pop is what defines motion picture for me...

...but that's always been under low light, dim-but-not-black subjects. Please do post your meta data and/or a frame grab, very curious about this.

I have the same problem. What could be causing this?? I've done black shading many times now.

Is it a moving/pixelated noise? What redcode did you shoot at?

I'll post some pics in a bit. I shot in Redcode 10 and then 8 with no change in the noise. Shot a commercial for a hospital last week under the same build with no changes and it was grain free. I'm rendering now, having to use NEAT Video to clean up this mess. I'll post some images ASAP. Luckily, NEAT is solving my immediate problem.

I've had takes of the same EXACT thing where i see bubbling noise jumping all around in the blacks, but on the next take it's clean---and all has been blackshaded etc...I looked at my redcode and see i was at 12:1.....not sure if that has ANYTHING to do with is since i think that's equivalent to Redcode 38 as in R1....

bottom line is i see this as well---if in fact this is what you are talking about?

I use 12:1 and 10:1 and 7:1 sometimes. No improvement. I seem to get consistently poor blacks. It seems like some of you are actually getting varying results, which is even weirder!!! Anyone gotten this to work?

Can you guys post R3D snapshots of 5-10 seconds of material with metadata. I'm assuming that blackshading steps were done properly and that things were lit under the correct ISO right?

Also, are you using any of the new filters RED has provided in Redcine-X Pro?

Steve, you mean Alchemy, Sturation and film look?
....for me it's right off the RAW R3d....natural light outdoors etc...I'll see if i can actually find a clip---as i am going through 18 hours of material now....and on a roll. Maybe i can digress to find one or come across one later---mine are very infrequent, but there.
