Feels like a hundred years ago when I last shot a REDONE... and when I did, it felt like it doubled in size and complexity to use, strange how that happens.
I picked up a 435 last year and it felt so weird, I have used that camera for 15 years! and it quiet literally did my head in... in my right ear was a scratching mechanical sound of film rolling through spools and cogs, It's a sound that I did not remember hearing, I thought something was wrong with it... But still an amazing camera.

But the RED ONE... 4k!!! 3 years ago! such a life changing camera for us when it came out. it quite literally made us millions in those last 3 years.

I was just looking at the specs again of the Scarlet... tossing back and forth wether to buy one or not...more as a toy with such a disposable price, and then realised it was so close to REDONE specs!! .. but for less that half the price and is less than 3rd the weight... and 1/3 the size...

How the hell did RED do it... Congrats guys... :) this little camera seems like a gift! you can buy ten of these over an ALEXA... when you start comparing specs with the ARRI as well.. even these little guys eat the Alexa.. (accept for Alexas new lower res 120 FPS function in PRO RES) but hey!...

Regradless... all I can say is WOW... 10k for a small 4k camera.

oh... and are you selling any new REDONES of late, it's still on your pages for sale. :)))

Great post Mark...

indeed it has been a ride and then some..I have been around for a couple of years but consider myself of the "Epic" generation. I think about the first time I saw Peter Jackson with his Red One "clarice" on his knee, I was thinking then what an amazing camera. Then Epic....Wow. How do you begin to compare? What Red have accomplished to squeeze the Red One plus even more capability into a coffee can still makes my head spin. Now Scarlet-X, who can really touch this camera at the price point it is at? Soon Dragon, then who knows from there...all I can say is I am so thankful to have discovered Red back then, I remain loyal as ever today. Jim, Jarred, the whole Red Team....what an amazing combination of people who have come together to build in incredible camera...

Mark, Now that I have my Epic I kind of miss shooting with my Red One. A friend of mine is picking up her tomorrow for a few days rental….
God, I will love to have some way to upgrade the boards, sensor, etc. to be able to shoot 5K+ in the future….. I love using this camera in cine style….

Aside from a few frame specs in 3k and 2k, Scarlet pretty much beats or equals out the R1 in all categories! It's mind boggling to me. Whatever magic sauce they've discovered in the last three years is certainly some potent stuff...

(oh and R1 has 4 audio channels on the body instead of 2 on Scarlet)

Yep... the scarlet is most certainly a big player. But I think I'll stick with my EPICs...
I got this bad habit of shoot 300 Fps every now and then :)

The Scarlet is a nice camera - no doubt, but there's a lot of very good reasons for shooting the RED ONE instead of the Scarlet - some of which being:

- Full 4-channel audio support for both Mic and Line (mini-)XLR inputs
- It shoots 4.5K WS up to 30 fps (which is great if you're goint to 2.40:1 anyway)
- Shoots 2K up to 120fps
- Multiple HD-SDI outputs
- Supports both EVF and LCD at the same time
- Aux power
- Supports recording to CF cards
- Very reliable (battle-tested) ;-)

I'm not saying the Scarlet doesn't have advantages over the R1, but by the time the Scarlet has modules added onto it to support the same things as the R1, the size and weight difference becomes more or less irrelevant.

Needless to say I still LOVE my R1 (and my Epic) ;-)

agree...Last weekend I shot 2 days straight with the R1...solid....not a hickup (other than a crazy HDMI connector). CF drives and lots of drives...can't beat the fact that I can shoot hours and hours and hours without costing me a fortune on media.

The best post EVER I saw on the advantage of the R1 over the Scarlet was the following:

8 - If it falls on the ground it will break the ground.
9 - No one will grab it and manage to run away with it.

I love my Red One MX, its image, and its reliability. It's still making money and I'll be hanging on to it.

And yes, I have broken the ground with it. :=)
