  1. #1 RED One MX price drop in 2012??
Just announced today was the Epic x stage 4, iv'e noticed since the long awaited release of the Scarlet RED One owners selling off there kits almost like an epidemic,
To an extent i suppose it ushers in the new era of RED, being cross compatible and highly modular with so many great third party accessories designed for the DSMC
versions, comparing the Scarlets capabilities current and future ( Dragon ) i can't help but think there is TOO big of a price difference between Scarlet X and RED one MX

considering stage 4 Epic is $27,500! WOW!

Any know of any scheduled future price drop for the RED one?? This is certainly not a criticism of the RED one camera at all, Same quality, ect but in terms of future proof
the design almost seems a little out dated by Epic/Scarlet standards

All I know is that I am VERY, VERY unhappy about how the resale value of Red-Ones has plummeted. Anyone selling their Red-Ones now will be losing a LOT of money. And, that, I personally, just cannot afford to do. I mean, the average price of a used "complete kit", with SSD modules, SSD Cards, and the works, is about $14,000.oo. That is REALLY painful to see.

Since our Red-One is virtually new, with only about 30 minutes of footage shot with it, I was hoping to sell it, with only a minor lose, to pay for a complete Scarlet-X set up. Especially since the original cost of the Red-One "body" is about the same as the entire cost of a Scarlet-X package. We wanted the Scarlet for only two reasons; smaller and lighter. Because, for our type of cinematography, that makes it ideal.

But, it does not look like we're going to be able to do this, because we are a VERY small company and just cannot afford the lose and financial outlay for yet another camera.

I too, was thinking the Red-One was more future-proof than it is, and am sorely disappointed to see that it is not.

If this keeps up, a year from now, you'll probably be able to pick up a "good" used Red-One package for about $5,000.oo :(

I'm afraid it's a sign of the times, and a result of the technology race photography/cinematography equipment is in. It is only going to get worse. The greatest camera in the world now, will be obsolete a year from now. Sad, very sad.

    Oh well, life goes on.

Careful guys! All I can say there are two third part companies with the intention in working together to upgrade the Red Ones to an epic level...at what cost? No idea……Whit the consent of Red Co.? No idea.
Personally I will not sell my Red One until is clear what the Red Co. or Third Cos. will do with the load of Red Ones available on the market.

If this happens, a lot of people are going to be very happy, including me. A Red One is a wonderful camera, and will be for many years to come.

This is a silly thing to say. It's the same camera now it was last year.

I think the MX RED One will be current for a long time. I would have one instead of a Scarlet any day. I'm a small company and we've put our RED One on our mortgage to buy it. I think it's still the camera of choice because of it's reliability, connectivity and cost. With SSD cards and bomb and a bomb EVF is should be lighter. I really don't need to shoot 5k yet. 4k is plenty and compatible with workflow right now. I hope they continue to develop improvements for the RED One. Compared to an ALEXIA it's still the camera I'd rather have.

Businesses cycle through cameras every three years on average. In three years time, all cameras will probably do 4k or more, RED Ones will be selling for $3000, Epics might sell second-hand for $10,000. You never know.
At the moment, Epic fever is in full swing. But remember, you still have a very professional and capable camera that continues to film many great movies.

I couldn't agree more. I think it is just awful that the car I bought 3 years ago and put 100,000 miles on has lost half of it's resale value. What a bummer. I think automakers should stop making new models and improvements so my resale value will remain higher. Never mind that I bought the best car I could afford at the time and they are reported to last for 300,000 miles. Guess if I can't afford the new model, I will be stuck with the one I have for the next six years. This just isn't fair.

    AMAZING...
so basically you bought the RED One in the days of Epic and Scarlet , you don't even really have demands to use it (30 min usage? really ?), and you are blaming the market because you loose money if you sell it now ????

How about make better business plan before make an investment ...if worried by loosing money people should have stopped to buy New Red One 6 months Ago , unless for a big demand (and certain) Reason (like for feature Film etc..)

ps:i think you should not sell it back , but keep renting it , that at todays rates will take a bit more than 1 year to make the money back instead of 6 months (red one packages now starts be priced at 2000/week )

No need to have two threads on the silly discussion on value.
