So, I am just figuring out my new camera here. I can't find an explanation in the manual (online) or searching the forum, for what 4k 2:1 & 2k 2:1 are?

    what is 2:1? Anamorphic?

Also: Can the camera do a 4k project @ 29.97? Mine doesn't show me the option.

    Thanks Much,
    Rich

I am sure I will have more stupid questions to follow.

2:1 just means that you have the option of shooting an image that is 2x1 or 16x9 in shape -- it's not anamorphic. I think in 4K RAW mode, a 2x1 frame is 4096 x 2048, rather than 4096 x 2304 for 16x9.

The first batch of cameras were limited by software to 2x1 images but I think 16x9 is now enabled, or soon to be. Same goes for shooting 4K at 30 fps (and I assume 29.97 fps) -- if it's not yet enabled, it will eventually unless I am mistaken.

Their may still be some limitations on using 16x9 on the post end, I haven't kept up. Check the release history for RedAlert, Redcine, or the QT codec before you mount up a big project in 16x9.

    Hi David, Thank You Sir!

My camera #115 will do 4k2:1 @29.97, but not regular 4k @29.97. But that makes sense if the 2:1 difference is just a few hundred pixles.

    Other thoughts?

4K 2:1 is still the workhorse. Hard to go wrong with that unless you are truly finishing to 4K. And you want those extra pixels.

Quicktime and RedAlert don't currently like the 16:9 4k format. Redcine likes everything though. 16:9 functionality will come to future QT and RA though.

We did some last minute 2nd unit shots for JUMPER on a beta of Build 12 in 4K (16 x 9) - works great in REDCINE - the VFX guys want all the screen real-estate they can get -

we did both our features in 4K 2:1 - but I think our next will be 4K (16 x 9) pending some downsample tests -

Most [if not all] of the work we've done has been in 2:1... if for no reason other than the Red Alert!, Quicktime and FCP compatibility. I'll shoot 16:9 all the time when it's "fully" enabled across the board, but for now... 2:1 is the safest bet for me.

OK, New twist. When I set the project to 4k2:1 @29.97 no varispeed, the camera gives me a "Recording Error - FrmRate_TooHigh"

any ideas? am I setting it up wrong?
