Jim, Prometheus will be finished 2K. Wouldn't dvxuser be better place for this thread since this movie isn't up to RED standards? (see: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?78175-Zacuto-Great-Camera-Shootout-and-free-parking!/page2&p=998404#post998404)

Prometheus will run at 4K all the way to deliverables, where most versions will run 2K for regular digital projection and film recording, but they will have a 4K option, which will be delivered to select 4K theaters. I assure you of that. Ridley went as far as to say that if he bothered having Blade Runner re-scanned at 4K for the latest BluRay version, where basically nobody had the benefit of enjoying the 4K quality, that now he's shooting at 4K natively, he wants to make sure that 4K can be seen wherever possible. I was there when he said that. And Fox has agreed since these "negatives" are already 4K ready and no scanning is necessary. This movie is a BIG deal for Fox, it took them a while to convince Ridley to do this, which he wouldn't do even after vast sums of money were thrown at him. So now he's done something that most people agree far surpasses their wildest hopes, they will push this movie at many levels, but namely, as a visual spectacle by a master of visuals, so not having a 4K deliverable would be stupid. Studio heads lack vision and creativity but they are not stupid.

DCP Question ... since Prometheus is shot at 2.35 Aspect Ratio ... that means that the 4k viewing will be4096×1716 pixels, and most people will be watching it at 2048×858 pixels ?

Also Ridley tends to use physical models and composite them, so are most of the "special effects" composited physical models which were shot at 5k ?

Ummmmm..... I'm sure the 8-9 shots in the movie without VFX will be in 4k. The other 99.9% is being done in 2k. What are you basing this conclusion on? That's running contrary to what I've heard from people working on shots. If it's 4k it'll be news to them. :P

I'm seeing a lot of CG in the trailers and not much miniature work. And even miniatures now a days are usually just glorified matte painting elements to layer behind and on top of CG.

I saw Blade Runner in 4k on a Sony projector here in Los Angeles a few years ago.
    It looked amazing.

Thanks Gavin ... that would mean that the vfx are done at 2048×858 pixels (the trailers in the movie theaters look great to my eye ... which is close to what average people think).

The VFX were done by Weta Digital, MPC in London, Fuel VFX, Luma, Invisible Effects, Hammerhead, and a bunch of other smaller companies. My guess is, some of the effects will be 4K, and the rest in 2K uprezzed to 4K. It's a good question as to what the percentage is.

Stephen Nakamura at Company 3 in Santa Monica did the final color-correction on it (on DaVinci Resolve), so they were most likely heavily involved in the final conform and outputs. Given the 3D involved, I would be surprised if it was 4K end-to-end, but anything is possible, given enough time and money. I don't doubt it'll look great.

I doubt any companies are working in anything larger than the production specs except a couple shots for some odd sampling reason. Production hands out delivery specs at the beginning and that's how everyone will work/deliver their shots.
