The Epic X will be an interesting phenomenon in the used gear market. Right now you might get a good wave of second hand deals due to the stage program, but, through my amateur analytic eye, i believe second hand prices will actually go up as soon as the stage 2 and 3 costumers sell their stock. The majority of low ball sellers are the ones with a Red Epic M already, so they don't need the extra Epic and plan to recoup some of their money invested on the M with the sell.

By the end of 2012 and early 2013 (if the world doesn't end, that is- if it does than I admit, terrible investment) prices will rise because those searching for a new Epic will be either looking for a new bare bones Epic X with the price of 35 000 USD, or have to search on the second hand market for Epic X users that are not "desperate" to recoup the Epic X M investment. Also, we also have to take into account the upcoming "THe Hobbit", "Prometeus" and "Spider Man" factors, as well as the good press and possible nomination of "Dragon Tattoo" for best cinematography at the Academy Awards. And then, of course, there's the "Dragon" factor, a posssible 5 000 USD upgrade for Epic owners and a further price increase in Epic X cameras, which could also mean a further added value for the camera resell... My take if I was a stock brocker, would be to buy the used Epic X bargains now, and wait for a resell after this initial wave of stage 2 resells and Epic Blockbusters coming out. The demand will be there and people will pay good money for them- much more than the current 30K this sale is going for, for example.

Red did you a favor and increased the price of the x recently and also gave you early access to a full epic package. P+S technik screwed me, oh well. Be thankful Red is more than just a money making company, they actually offer incentives and upgrades to buy into their product... When no one else is doing the same......
Thanks for the sermon on what I should be thankful for and how I should view my world - I was deeply moved. Pretty sure, and I hope, RED is a for profit company that acts in their own self interest to make a profit - as I do. Everything changes . . . so keeping an eye on the potential cost of that change is a basic business need.

Sergio, that sounds like wishful thinking... I think the opposite. Too many people bought the X... don't have clients for it... assumed it would the same as RED ONE (its not) and will flood market by Jiune

    Ill bet you a 64GB SSD ;)

Agreed. Seems RED has created a phenom in that would be clients have their own cameras. I'm surprised at the number of production companies that stock their own cameras. Folks who typically rent now have their own. Maybe glass rentals is the wave of the future....

I'm affraid I'm too broke with my Epic package order to take you on that bet, Tim :) If I lost I would have to sell it cheap to pay for your 64 GB card, oh, wait...

As you could see, the price jumped to 51 000 USD!

I think many people wanting to sell their Epics should do the clever move and wait for the blockbuster season to pass. And also wait for NAB. I'm sure Red has lots of interesting things to announce by then. Of course the competition isn't sleeping, but I'm sure Red has a plan established a long long time ago of what to do right now. I don't know if you all have noticed, but Soderbergh, on the "Che" Making- Of piece about using the Red camera (this was what, 2006, early 2007?) he said something like "Red are working on their next camera, which is 5K (...)" No one paid much attention to that, but it means the Epic was in development for at least 4 years. Jim stated in his most recent posts his commitment to "obsolescence obsolete" and "modularity". I'm sure that we are in for some big surprises in the very near future that will take both the Epic and the Scarlet well beyond to what they do now. So I really don't ssee prices going down on resell- unless some isolated sellers that are desperate right now sell them for bellow market value, and this happens in every industry, may it be in real estate, luxury goods, etc- those are called "bargains"!

As for people owning their cameras vs rentals, I'm really happy this is happening for both Epic and Scarlets. It means more and more what is sold in a job will be the talent behind the equipment and not the equipment in itself. Is this bad for the rental business? Maybe. The camera part of the rental business might not be as profiteable as it was before. However, other big opportunities are opening, like the it and media rental business: Mobile workstations, media, support equipment, Io equipment, the always needed lighting and lenses... There's still good money to be made in the rental business, indeed.
