I thought it might be good for RED to see what users really want in a simple to the point and concise thread that lists users top 5 requirements.

If you want to contribute (please do), please just keep the noise down and the count to 5. Yes I know you want to list more. So did I.

    Mine...

    1. S16 sized sensor at a minimum that does 1080p to 2k at up to 120fps. Over and undercranking please.
    2. Interchangeable lens mount.
    3. RAW format
    4. Solid state memory. Keep the CF's rollin baby.
    5. High quality, high res and decently big built-in LCD. Something that's worth while.

    1. s16 sensor or s35mm sensor with 1080p at 2k RAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    2. Interchangeable lenses with interchangeable lens mount.
    3. CF cards!!!!!!
    4. NOT TOO EXPENSIVE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a student filmmaker and the cheaper the better. Honestly if you could keep Scarlet under 5k with a lens, I would be really really really happy. It would be the last camera I would buy or rent for a VERRY long time.
    5. I would like to have it by October 15th 2008...

Good idea Gene, here's my two cents - basically I'd love Scarlet to be a digital equivalent of the Aaton A-Minima. That is: a compact (but not 'tiny'), robust camera that shoots digital footage equivalent to s16mm film.

    So my top five are:

    1. Interchangeable lens mounts (I'd really like to be able to use my Nikon glass)
    2. CF card recording (ideally with multiple CF slots)
    3. Shooting format: 2K Redcode RAW (i.e. s16mm equivalent quality)
    4. Variable framerates (up to 60fps would be nice, 100fps would be wonderful)
    5. A built-in EVF would also be great

Pretty similar to Gene's list I guess. If Scarlet can come out something like this count me in. Heck I'd probably buy two.

    one little itty bitty request:

    COMPOSITE OUT!!!

Much easier to implement during the design phase than the "strap an AJA box on because they didn't include it" phase. I understand the idea behind trying to leverage the industry... but in reality unless RED has figured out a way to do wireless HD video on the cheap with 0 delay, composite is still a necessity in some situations.

    2K+
    RAW
    up to 120 FPS
    2 CF Slots
HDSDI and HDMI all the time

If we're asking for 2K, i.e 1/4 the Resolution of RED ONE, can we get roughly 1/4 price?

Did Ted go on the record at NAB last year that the "Red Mini" would be 4K? I thought I remembered that from somewhere...

At this early stage of development, I have one overriding thought about the Scarlet camera. And that is: At long last, there is hope that the accursed HDV format will be relegated to sub-consumer cameras that are sold in the bargain bin at Best Buy.

I despise that format, and have done so since it arrived on the scene. I don't mean to offend anyone who makes their living as a videographer with HDV equipment; I understand the market dynamics that spawned that (there I go again) utterly tepid format. And it's better than SD . . . I suppose.

It is such a compromise of quality.

And based on the Red One, and since Jim is making the new pocket camera, I have confidence that the Scarlet won't be such a compromise at any level.

Thanks, Jim. My VISA card awaits the opening of reservations.

1)SMALL,SMALL,SMALL-I'll sacrifice all HDSDI and etc.. to keep the size down. Just the essentials please. This camera should be for special applications only. Not to shoot an entire film on. HDMI? For framing and decent picture preview.
2)CREATIVE MOUNTING POSSIBILITES - could be high rez helmet cam or could be mounted anywhere my RED ONE couldn't. Otherwise I'll just use my RED ONE! I also like to shoot stuff without attracting attention like larger bodies do.
3)FIXED LENS- this is to keep size down possibly. depends on what kind of sensor area you could cover I suppose. Wide wide angle zoom? 10mm-40mm. Big PL glass will beg for FF and MB.
3)HIGH SPEED - crash cam applications if its small.
4)HIGH RES- The current iconix hd lipstick cams look a little soft/foggy when intercut with broadcast HD. Should intercut with RED ONE. 3k if no 4k? Bigger the sensor the better.
5)LOW LIGHT SENSITIVITY-guerilla, natty light situations, no permit shots in Staples center in 4k! That what I'm talkin about! Somtimes I don't want big crews and etc.

This is what I would use it for. However I have a feeling RED is targeting a larger demographic with this camera as opposed to something that integrates itself with the RED ONE. ie. not for special applications and low profile guerilla shooting that the RED ONE can't do.

I wonder if they have thought about a small camera and deck scenario as well. Like lipstick cameras but 4k. Perhaps no need if you can keep it all in one.

    1 As light as possible.

2 A different battery (as in not the Brick) something small and light. If you could cram in a port to attach a brick cradle to that would be a bonus.

3 An automated removable lens. It would be really cool if you could make an Automated lens that used data sent from the Camera to make its adjustments.

4 1080P 444RGB and as close to the Red One's look as possible.

5 Not have a built in screen. The display screen/menu screen should be detachable.

6 an attachable CF card module that lets you stick 4 or more CF cards in it.

Make all the recording and monitoring gear attachable to cut down on size.

7 Comes with free super model and only cost $2.50USD and can hover on its own, and films in Full 3D and has a feature where it uses a sonar pulse to map the entire room in full 3D. and is bullet proof and have the voice of Hal. and be bright pink. and water proof, and friendly towards children and old people, and have a collapsible butt stock.:ranting2:

Thats my wish list... no, demands list!, the bright pink part is very important. If its not pink, sales will be very poor. :ranting2:
