Just came across a deal where I can get a brand new Canon 10-22 EF-S lens for a song. Don't have much experience with this lens and most reviews, though very positive, are fairly old.

I would probably use it some with the Red, but mostly I'd put it to work as night time-lapse lens , one where I can leave a camera way out somewhere on its own and not loose much sleep over it. Would never do that with an Epic or even a 5D. But a Canon 40D-- yeah, I'd sleep at night.

So, those with some experience with this lens; what are your thoughts?

Sing it! Sharp, clean, decent zoom range and wiiiide. Several people used it with R1s and had glowing posts about it. It isn't very fast or new, though I think it is still sharp wide open, so it could work well.

Thanks Roberto. I went out in the desert and did some night sky shots with the 10-22 on a 40D and compared them with some 16-35 on a 5D. Not the most scientific comparison, but there is not much different in spherical aberration between the two. The extra 1/2 stop makes a difference though.

Yes, that is a better way to go if the price is right, plus it compliments perfectly with the Tokina which is also f/2.8 and almost as wide as the Canon

Here's a concise review of it:

    http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/40...45_50d?start=1

    Summary:

    - Distortion at 10mm but only 1.2% barrel

    - Keep it at f/5.6 or narrower to minimize light fall-off; when wide-open it's over a stop

    - Resolution is very good

    - Noticeable CA but not horrible

IMHO I'd say it's a good lens judging from the review. Be glad that it isn't an f/2.8 lens, otherwise it wouldn't be this good. The price is not bad, either.

One of my favourite lenses on the R1. Lovely.

joe, i would recommend the tokina over the canon - however, i've been using the canon a lot lately and i do love it - main noticeable difference is distortion and light levels. if you can get it for a considerably low price from a considerably trustworthy source, i'd definitely get it. but if it's not a huge deal, i'd think about forking out a tad bit extra for the tokina (which is listed less, actually).

here's some shots i've gotten with the 10-22 lately, like i said - i love the range it provides. color rendition is 'normal' - at least until i get a hold of the images ;)

As you can imagine, I test a lot of wide angles. In my comparison between 10-22 and toki 11-16 I could see slightly more sharpness on the 10-22, but they are both very sharp.

Thanks all for your input. Been playing around with the 10-22 on the Red. On a 40D sharpness from edge to edge look fantastic. On the Red, however, the edges are VERY soft. Just with this lens. With a 24-70 everything is good. No so with the 10-22. Suppose this could be a back focus issue except the other lenses look fine. Any ideas what could be causing this?

One of my favorite lenses. Not fast, but very wide with more "natural" looking distortion than other ultra-wides. Would be a great lens if you're shooting inside a submarine.
