Trying to decide which one to pick up.

The non IS version retails for $1500 while the IS II USM version retails for $2500.

Is there such a jump in quality as to justify the extra grand? For that matter is 'IS' that critical for motion picture shooting? For the record, the lens will be primarily used on a Scarlet and occasionally Epic M. Any advice and input appreciated!

IS is both good and bad. Good if the shot is static as its very stable but the image will wander from the IS if you try to pan. I believe opticaly they are near identical.

iS is essential if you plan to do any handheld work. You can switch it off if you don't like it

Thanks for the prompt reply Dave!

I'm a fan of dynamic shots (dolly, slider, steadicam, etc). Doubt I'll be shooting much pure static shots. I suppose I'll have to trust my head/sticks for image stability lol. Probably leaning to the non IS version at the moment. The extra grand could be put into better use (ie. a nice L series prime).

If you ever plan to use as a still lens, get the IS. It is amazingly good for shooting handheld and getting Sharp images.
