I need to extend the power cable on the AC adaptor for the Epic.
This is to feed power trough our milo.
The thing is I need to feed it trough a 3 pin XLR using 2 pins. As I understand the power supply is 4 cables going trough a 4 pin lemo...

So question what color are positive and wich is minus/ground?

It's like in the movies, doing it wrong will make the bomb explode... But I need to do it and the camera is all ready on it's way to the shoot so there is no room for trail and error..

Then understand that you do this entirely at your own risk Bjorn. We do NOT endure this action.

At minimum this will void warranty, and any resulting damage to equipment or persons is your responsibility.

    Understood.
Please let me know the current of the different cables. My camera is on a truck to going to france and I got the charger here. When I get down there on wednesday we will start shooting right away and to survive I need to be able to feed power trough our milo rig. At the head I'ts solved by mark roberts but we had some misunderstandings so in the back/ base of the rig I have a male 3 pin XLR with positive to one pin and ground and minus to the other pin... so it's just using 2 pins.

What I would like to do is basically cut of the power cable on the AC and install a female and male 3 pin XLR there so I can use the AC with our rig and also as normal with female - male connector on the cable.

Generally 3 pin XLRs are used for audio and 4 pin XLRs are used for power. Using a 3 pin could lead to some errors down the road.

    Another couple of questions,

Can the Red One charger be used on Epic. if so is the lemo to Epic lemo convertor cabe best to use ?

    or

Can the existing power unit Red Lemo be replaced by an Epic Lemo ?

    or

Can the power unit Red Lemo be replaced with an XLR4 and use a Red made XLR to Epic Lemo Cable ?

Standard wiring for XLR4 is pin 1 cold pin 4 hot.

The latter is my preference ?

    What kind of errors?
Normally you run +, - and ground. What would the fourth wire do?

I understand that connecting the ground and "minus" is not ideal. but the rig has 3 slip rings between the camera and power supply so running 4 cables is not possible. We feed every other camera trough this cable, including the Arri cams that has higher voltage.

Based on what you have said your intent is I can't offer you more specific information, except as follows.

    - Do NOT attempt to modify the RED charger. If you do proceed despite our warning, then it is entirely at your own risk.

    - If you wish to use a XLR based power system, use an XLR based power source and fabricate an XLR to LEMO adaptor cable.

    - Voltage accepted by the EPIC is 17v Max / 11.5 v Min. Max current draw is 10Amp. Typical power consumption is ~ 70W

Hi Dave, there are a couple of issues here - Wattage Rating and FCC Certification.

Rating : The EPIC AC power adaptor is rated for 150W, but RED ONE units may be either 150W or 100W depending on the version of sensor in the RED ONE.

FCC : EPIC is a Class B device, which requires all accessories to also be certified as Class B, however RED ONE and it's AC power adaptors are certified as Class A.

That means although a RED ONE 150W AC power adaptor has enough capacity to run an EPIC, we can't sell you one for that purpose or endorse the use of that.

And finally any modification to the product will invalidate the FCC certification, so we can't recommend that you do that.

These rules may sound restrictive, but they are there for a good reason and we respect them.
