Great Tripod Resource

A few weeks ago, I was shopping diligently for a tripod. I scoured the internet up one side and down the other searching for something used, demo, or b-stock, so I could save some money.

I ended up getting a demo Cartoni Delta, 2 stage CF sticks, with a spreader and soft case for $4689 (including shipping), and it included a 5 year warranty.

A similar system is $6,000+ from B&H:

The place I got it from is called Media Concepts, and they have the best prices and widest selection of tripods of any place I found.

The best part is they have an inside track on gettting demo and used equipment directly from the manufacturers.

So far the Cartoni Delta has been a solid performer as a lightweight run and gun tripod.

My brother and I shot a bunch of footage up at Sundance last week and it was very nice that the tripod was so light. We carted it up and down Main Street in Park City several times without the kind of fatigue we would have had with say, an Oconnor 2060.

That said, I have since mounted my Red to a 2060 and felt the difference. I will definately be purchasing a 2060 in the future. I couldn't afford two tripods at once, so I decided to get a lighter weight run and gun tripod first, then a tripod for heavy lifting later. I think I made the right choice, but if I'd had the extra $4,000 for a 2060, it might be a different story. As it is, the $4,000 I saved by going with the Delta has gone a long way toward a matte box, a FF, and some other accessories.

The Cartoni Delta can handle up to 48 lbs, but I can already tell it would be straining under that weight. My current build without a FF and matte box is around 30 lbs, and the Delta seems very happy at that weight.

It seems that it will meet most of my needs. It's incredibly smooth for it's size, and performed well in the 9 degree weather at Sundance this year.

I recommend it over the Oconnor 1030 for run and gun. It weighs about the same but has a higher load rating for those times when I might be loading up the camera with a heavier (longer) lens, and/or accesories.
