I only get about 5-6' with my REDmote as well. Really do hope they improve the range as it would be helpful in many situations.

Ours is working to 8 meters feet and with a x top on the camera which I think obscures the ariel and it has the removable top plate insert still on the camera. Id recon its reliable to about 4M but YMMV.
This may be deemed entirely off topic for this thread, but I love my Redmote. I tested it yesterday at 40 feet and 3 walls separation. It worked fine. Did not lose connection once. But in another situation with only two walls and a large piece of floor to ceiling wall furniture in between, I did lose signal and wouldn't deem that satisfactory. That was from about 30 feet.
But then I went line-of-site in front of the camera for about 75 feet and a glass window in between and it worked great. Admittedly all I was testing was camera record off/on, but from those distances, that's all I really care about. Enter button has worked perfectly so far, too.
With what I've been reading here, I was expecting worse results. With the way I'm going to use my cameras, I am going to be using my Redmote on just about every shoot. I even put it in my pocket and reached in and punched the button for on and off. Very handy tool.

Since I am having a fairly good experience with my Redmote, I thought I would make a quick iPhone video test to show you my results.

Hope this video helps, and I sincerely believe some of you are having mixed results.
I've used around 20 different REDmotes and they've all pretty much had the same limited range as far as connectivity.
Maybe 8ft maybe 10ft? Regardless it comes down to my crew unfortunately not being able to rely on it.
Since day one I knew the 'mote would be a great piece of tech, and an 1st AC & DP/directors dream.
To have remote roll, histogram and customisable control of all the major functions in the palm of my hand and to step back, let someone else operate.. Awesome.
But having to disconnect and reconnect, recharge, dock, wait, restart or not walk away from the sweet spot is of course I'm sure not how red meant this to play out.
A bit of a buzz kill that results in my crew not bothering to take it off the camera or out of the box.
Im sure this will be sorted and that maybe FCC approval or something is holding this tech back or maybe just a change in the red link spec or firmware will improve things.
Keep the faith![]()
I'm repeating myself, but I say supply us with a cable that can connect camera and Redmote. It would do everything I need a Redmote to do, almost all of the time, with 100% reliability. The only caveat would be that protection should be built in , to prevent catastrophe if the Redmote was dropped into water.
Definitely seems weird (for lack of a better term) that there are some that are rock solid while, it would seem, so many others are wonky (for lack of a better term). :-)
I have mine but without a camera, I can only hope it's one of the "good" ones.![]()
I bet you got one of the "good ones", Terry. We have another being shipped this week, and you know I have my fingers crossed.
"Rock Solid" is certainly not the phrase I would use to describe the Redmote at this time, but it is pretty damn solid and the range performance has been more than decent for us. However, that said, I have received a couple error messages when re-docking the Redmote followng a period of being detached. That situation actually forces you to restart both the camera and Redmote.
The nice thing about Red stuff is that it usually get much better as they iron out the wrinkles.![]()
