I've dipped my toe into the Red Glass Pool, and I like what I'm seeing so far. My new 17-50mm is quite nice all things considered (especially price).
Is there any talk of Red coming up with any more 5K compatible lenses? Epic is right around the corner for us, and I'd love something in the 18-85mm range that actually works with 5k.
Anyone hear anything about this possibility? I think if Red keeps increasing the image area on their cameras, it would be in their better interest to also provide lens options.

Are you talking strictly zooms? Cause the Red Pro Primes will cover 5k on the Epic as well.

I'm good on primes, so YES, I guess I am talking about just zooms.

Does the RPZ 18-85 not cover FF?

I would love to see a new 50-150 to compliment the 17-50.

The RPZ 18-85 vignettes a bit at 5KFF when you creep wider than 20mm. I don't own the lens myself, so I'm trying to relay from memory, but it's not full-coverage at all focal lengths. The RPZ 17-50 vignettes a bit at 17mm when at 5K. Nothing critical, IMO. Many would argue it's still "covering".

The thing with 5K is it's not an issue with resolution, but frame size. 5K resolution on the EPIC is larger than S35, so we run into coverage problems with some lenses, especially the wider focal lengths. It's entirely possible that future sensors from RED (Dragon and beyond) will pack more pixels into the same or smaller space. So what is a "5K" problem today, may still be the same problem, only a "6K" problem tomorrow.

My two favorite zooms for the EPIC and "5K" are the Optimo DP "Rouge" 16-42 and 30-80. I can't wait to get my hands on the Optimo 45-120 and I hope they make a DP series equivalent to it! The down side to the Optimo DP zooms is that the 16-42 is 3X the price of the RPZ-17-50. Not only that, but it's even more expensive than that at the moment since their production still hasn't caught up with demand.

Thanks Jeff. I will find out exactly how it works when my EPIC arrives soon :)
It will be very interesting to see what the dimensions of the DRAGON sensor are as it could dramatically effect the options for lenses.

Im thinking the exact same thing. What if the Dragon sensor is 5D/FF sized? That's why I've been investing in Contax Zeiss still lenses. Cuz their FF! Need to be future proof right now. FF still lenses are a bridge to the future, until the future becomes more clear.

    Hi,
Arent Master and Ultra Primes not FF lenses?
What happens to these lenses once dragon is launched?
Will they cover the extra K that will come with dragon sensor?
    Thanks

well resolution has nothing to do with field of view. If it's just a high res sensor but the same size, all glass that's good with the epic will still be good. If it's a full frame sensor than you'll probably be stuck with stills glass and converted stills glass like compact primes.

ideally Dragon will be the same resolution and same size sensor as now, but with replaced processing boards and updated sensor design that increases sensitivity, native dynamic range and a much lower noise floor. similar to what the red mx was to the m sensor. that would make more sense to me so that the current camera can keep on shooting the same framerates or possibly more.

a larger sensor or higher resolution sensor might mean a drop on framerate capabilities.

Arri master primes & ultra primes are not FF lenses, I suspect it would be impossible to make a FF series T1.3 for the wide lenses.
People will go on shooting 4K, 5K, 35mm film & Arri Alexa.
