Great article on the new NBC series Smash, with DP David Mullen ASC.

Kudos to DM, this looks to be very good!

My first question is how they did those wonderful rooftop scenes, where the young black assistant is hanging with his roommates, I guess in Williamsburg, overlooking Manhattan. It looks almost green screen, but I thought it was beautiful nonetheless.

That rooftop scene was originally shot for the pilot episode by Shelly Johnson, ASC and then moved to one of my episodes. It was shot quickly at magic hour, I think with a paper lantern or muslin ball over the actors, that's it.

I have to agree with the above; I have watched all the episodes thus far and have been superbly impressed with Mr. Mullen's cinematography. Especially the transitions between the "actual life performances" and the "stage performances." absolutely seamless.

Watching it right now on the internet ( http://www.nbc.com/smash/ ), I really like that "mixed" reality feel.
