Hey guys, thinking about picking up a 4 core 2009 mac pro to RED ROCKET but am a bit concerned. Will I notice a large difference in transcoding speeds with the rocket on an 4 core compared to an 8 core mac pro?

No you won't notice any difference at all. Get it. The Redrocket does 90% of the heavy lifting, and is not very dependent on the tower it sits in. I've heard that the amount of RAM you have can affect it's performance, but nothing else. This is directly from an NYC DIT guy who works on Epic all the time and told me flat out there is no need to get an expensive tower for the Red Rocket for this very reason: the RR does all the work, and all your paying for with the newer tower is better processing for when you surf the web.

Thank you.. I"ve just seen some killer deals on 2009 mac pro 4 core beasts and was wondering if the extra $ is really worth it. Thank you!

Well hopefully I'm right! I'm quoting my friend Ted here, but he was pretty adamant that an older tower was just fine....so hopefully the info bears out. Im sure it does. He knows his sh*t.

My 2007 (Dual Dual Core) mac pro runs about 18-22 fps with a rocket. My 2009 Mac Pro runs 30fps. So yes it make a difference, but dual quad core should be fine.
