I've had the samurai since it was first released and it has been faultless for me.
Yes the screen is not very bright, but it was never proposed to be a day bright screen........so for what it is, it's fine.
As for D tap cable I've had one for the unit for a long time now........
It works great I can mount to the top of the epic and power off Vlock batt D-tap output........
no more ridiculous Sony camcorder batteries.......!

having owned both, I have to say that I prefer the Samurai for various reasons.
It's lighter, slightly smaller, less power hungry, and the RED trigger just works better than on the Pix.

My PIX 240 triggers flawlessly on my Scarlet via SDI (haven't tried HDMI).
D-tapped to camera's Brick and runs all day with the camera.
Screen nicely viewable under all but the worst (brightest) conditions - and the slick magnetic snap-on hood saves me then. On either device, a matte screen-saver film makes viewing easier by knocking down reflections I have found.
Agreed, a bit heftier, but considering its rugged construction, I consider this a plus. I think its button/control interface is going to be more durable than the Samurai touch-button approach in the long haul.
    Hands-down better in cold climates.
And as others have said, there really isn't a better way to get great sound into a RED other than, maybe, a Sound Devices Mixer...
    ;)
Best $$ I have spent on my Scarlet package...

Can i turn off the monitorring feature on Samurai.? To get less power consuming?
I just need the recording functions , i don't need a third monitor on my rig.
    Thanks

I'm very happy with my Samurai (not so happy with my Corsair SSD that died yesterday over night). I had it a while but just recently started to use it quite a bit. As I do quite a bit of slow mo it didn't fit very well into a lot of work I've done, but I recently discovered that I could record the playback of the slowmo footage from the Epic over HDSDI and have Prores files in realtime .

In an answer to my recent email query, Atomos states that DNxHD is being tested/tweaked for Ninja 2.
