I'm from the 5D customer. I bought the red epic and it seems to me impossible to find a shoulder mount rig that you can EASILY PULL focus directly on the lens. The gunner seems quite hard to it. You have to pull it on the top...weird. With the clutch or the recoil (zacuto) you have the grip for your two hand and the viewfinder is on the way to do the focus properly...

Do you guys know a rig that would help me do that. I previously bought the GORILLA KIT from zacuto and I absolutely loved it with my 5D. But with the red epic, it's just impossible to do it.

    Regards,

    Guillaume

Welcome to the real world ;)

I haven't seen anything out there that does the job

I can't stand footage that lacks focus so we had to invest in a wireless focus puller by ARRI and wireless HD transmitter along with a large monitor. I make sure the focus puller is sitting down focusing on the focus ;))

At this point, we manufactured our own rig, which you can use to focus the camera manually and you only need one hand to maneuver the camera so you can attach a wireless (or not) focus puller onto the rig. It does the job.

With the Clutch I swing the right handle out so it rests against my wrist, which frees up my hand for the focus knob. Not ideal but works.

Rig needs to be balanced correctly - I hang the batteries off the diagonally mounted rails on the back of the pad to compensate for the RPPs.

I've designed a shoulder rig system that works perfectly for that. I'll have more details by NAB. Guillaume, I'll actually be in Montreal in two weeks, so might be able to give you a preview.

I pieced together parts from Cinevate to create my own custom rig...works well. I will try and post images tomorrow. It's perfectly balanced, but the total rig is heavy, yet very comfortable.

Here's a quick and dirty shot I had on my phone. It sits on 45cm 15mm carbon fiber rails, so all components can slide back and forth so it's really customizable. You can see here I have a follow focus, but you can remove that and slide the camera back a bit.

I will take more detailed shots and post tomorrow and explain all the parts in detail. :-)

    Guillaume,

Using any of our shoulder mount systems you can rotate the grip so that your palm can rest on the grip itself and your fingers can focus via our micrFollowFocus. Take a look at the configuration here:

I've done this with systems from small DSLRs to the F3. Might be what you're looking for.

None of your rigs fit the non-arri height requirements for front rails on the Epic. It took me a ton of trial and error with various lift mounts to get a reasonable rig cobbled together. Redrock Micro gear won't really work until the assault plate is shipping.

Zacuto is about to announce a system that will mount on one of the rig's grips and will allow to pull focus from there on Epic and Scarlet.

Just wait for NAB, I don't think it's logical to invest in anything before it anyway
