    Hi Luigi,

I have everything I need to start building this beast, although I'm still waiting on a few pieces like the Decklink card and a new Monitor. As I get started putting in components I had some questions.

In post 1 you say that the SATA or SAS drives work, but you note in photo 4 that you should connect drives to the SAS ports. Do the SATA connections on the board not work?

Also, I notice it looks like you removed the DVD drive in your machine. Did you take it out since it didn't work or was it because you wanted the space for your 4 bay drive insert? Or maybe it just doesn't work in the SAS ports.

Finally, the machine came with 3 gigs of ram and I bought 24 more gigs (3X8). Should I just pull the 3 gigs and only use the new Ram or should put the new Ram in slots 2,4,6? More Ram is usually better, but I couldn't find anything that showed this configuration supported. I just want to make sure I have the most stable machine possible.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Walter

    Luigi,
I've got to say BRAVO to you! I've been watching you single-handedly show Redusers that creating a hackintosh is possible in the Davinci forum. And now you are packaging up a HP-based solution that you already troubleshot, and supporting people's first foray into this scarey water, and doing it for free!!

If Reduser had a reward for meritorious service, I'd nominate you. Thank for your generosity!

    Hi Luigi,
If apple does not announce a new Mac pro in the next two weeks I must build a resolve workstation without them. I like the idea of the hpz800 as an "off the shelf" hackintosh solution. As I really have little knowledge about building win pc, I plan to just follow your config and parts list exactly to give myself the best chance of it working right away. My only question is...the z800 is no longer made right? Do I have to buy one used? But it seems the z820 is not shipping yet? Where do I get a z800?
Thanks for your awesome dedication to this solution.

Edit...ok I see z800 are still for sale on hp site and earlier post has link to discount reseller. Of course I am confused by the endless variations available. But the single processor 6 core sounds like a good place to start. Then if apple comes out with new Mac pro later, I don't have $5k invested in a pc.

Last question...2 x gtx 580 3gb best price/performance and is there room in the z800 for both plus GUI card, plus hba, plus decklink?

ciao Paul , second Paul ahaha
you wait and see if anything happens, but according to Jeff Kilgroe the output will bescheduled for the end of this year, I hope you're wrong, but usually never wrong. is very accurate.
Well configurations tested by me are these:

1 CPU or 2 CPUs, 4 cores to 6 cores all is supported.
RAM from 2 GB to 96GB, plus I did not eheheheh

gui card: 8800 gt, 9800 gt, ati 5770 all single slot card.
cuda card: from gtx 460 to gtx 590
sas ports: all working, I'm testing also hot swappable. So to put some on the removable tray.
power: 850 w is ok from gtx 460 to gtx 580 3gb, if you want ussare the gtx 590 you must have 1100 watts.
    dvd recoder: supported.
fire wire 400: 2 doors both worked.
    USB: all ok
Audio onboard: works but creates problems, I have disabled the default, use usbspeakers. BM or AJA Kona and output with XLR.

My best configuration to be the following:

    hp z800, 2.93 8 core, 48 gb ram, 8 hd installed, 1 for os, 4 raid 0, 3 for all-in internalbackup machine.
    A 8800 gt 512 ram for gui, 1 for cuda gtx 590, 1100 watt power, bm 1 3d, 1 redrocketcard.
With this configuration I have no problems.
I recommend 1 gtx 590, although not as fast as 2 GTX 580 by about 20%, but you gain by having 2 gpu on a single card, but above all less heat inside the machine, which is important given that ventilation be air.
I state that right now I recommend 2 cpu, if utlizzate Adobe cs6, but if you use only 1cpu Davinci also goes very well.

I took everything used on ebay, the IT company CREATIONS, fast and friendlyproducts are good, the machine empty with 18 gb ram 2.93 ghz have paid 2100dollars.
But if you find any better.

If you're worried about your configuration does not worry me lend a hand with noproblems, though sometimes I prepare you already lion on the system hard drive and I send him there, so just worry about installing the rest of the PC.

    THANKS
    LUIGI

    Thanks Luigi!
I will start looking for z800 dual 4 core CPU. I think I will risk the heat and go with 2 gtx580 as I think Peter at resolve says more gpu ram = less " out of memory" errors with 4k media.
You are a great help and I will try not to ask too many stupid questions!

remember that it can at most have 2 video cards in the HP z800, in your case you would have a gtx 580 for the gui and 1 gpu for cuda.

and 1 card for 4k is not good.
