    Hi Andrew,

You can compare the controller a little bit to a pencil. Drawing with a pencil is way easier, faster and nicer than with a mouse.

In resolve you'll find yourself using the primary controls a lot, let's say 75% of the time youre workíng in there. Specifically these controls are very hard to use with a mouse and very easy with the trackballs.

My last point is that you can keep your eyes on the image while you're using the controller, which makes the whole process more 'organic' as you work with your hands to craft what you see.

I have a tangent wave panel and i absolutely love it. Its mobile and has usb connection and also text labelled leds (something the artist color is missing) so its easy to learn.

I'm not by far a pc builder so I asked a good friend of mine to help me picking some parts that should work together.
My question is if this is a good configuration and what could I espect for realtime perfomance in resolve with 4k r3d as source material?
Im not sure how Adobe premiere works with dual graphic cards so that why I choosed two gtx 580.

    The pland PC

    ASUS P9X79 PRO X79 S-2011 ATX + CORSAIR H100 HYDRO CPU COOLER
COOLER MASTER SILENT PRO GOLD ATX12V 2.3 1200W
    2x GIGABYTE GEFORCE GTX 580 3GB PCI-E DVI/HDMI
    INTEL CORE I7 3930K 3.20GHZ 12MB S-2011
    KINGSTON 24GB 1066MHZ DDR3 ECC REG W/P - KVR1066MHZD3Q8R7SK3/24G
LIAN LI FULLTOWER PC-A77FB EATX SILVER
    OCZ OCTANE 2.5" 256GB SSD SATA/600 MLC

An black magic card is also to be added shortly.

Any thoughts would be much appricated!

    Hi Joel,

Im also not a PC builder, but I'm currently researching my options for building a resolve system. The main thing I'm missing in your list is a graphics card for the GUI. If you add that, let's say a simple one, then Resolve will utilize the 2 GTX cards as GPU and tat will increase speed a lot!

Have you calculated the total cost for this workstation? I'm curious...

    Good luck,

    Pepijn

I just built a very si,ilar system with the same motherboard and processor. I got the GTX560ti with 2gb of ram from Asus which is about half the price of the GTX580 with 3gb of ram. I also have a quadro 580fx which i used for the gui in resolve. I tested it in resolve lite with a 1080p25 timeline debayering red 4k at half good at 10bit and it ran realtime just fine with 5 nodes. Im going to try running it with just the GTX560ti for both gui and processing and remove my much slower quadro 580fx. This will make running both premier and resolve much easier as premier only uses the primary display card for cuda processing.

Will update once i test it a little more. But based on my experience, your system should run 1080p timelines very nicely in resolve and get excellent performance in premier. My Quadro fx580 only has 32 cuda cores and runs premier with 4k r3d's nicely at 1/4 debayer.

Woah! Hearing figure like these makes me just want to wait for the next Mac Pro tower. 2k for a PC is more doable. If I am gonna pay 4k, I at least want a stable OS to run my apps.

How's windows 7 working for everyone?

Your right about Adobe's Mercury Playback Engin. But exactly wrong about Resolve. Resolve does not use the primary display card (GUI) for CUDA processing. It requires a second card for CUDA (gpu) processing.

    Paul,

So if you have one card that is ass kicking and one that is ehh, what do you? Is there some workaround, certainly switching their locations (either physically or chaging the primary monitor via the Desktop) is not a workable option everytime you switch apps.

    Thanks for the help!

You are correct, I was unclear in my statement. I meant easier in the sense that I won't have to swap cables back and forth between two video cards.

I have tried running resolve with just a single card for both GUI and Processing and its running quite fine for my current use. I'm getting realtime 4k 1/2 good at the moment...I've tested up to 5 nodes but haven't gone beyond that. I will probably get a 580 or 680 down the line when my resolve needs increase.

After over 3 extensive years with Windows 7 now, I can safely and definitively conclude it is the most stable and refined OS I have ever used. All it needs is a stable hardware build - so make sure you choose the right and balanced components, and of course, stable apps. In general, you will find several reports of Resolve builds on these forums based around X79, Core i7 39xx and GTX 580s. That has unanimously proved to be a high performance, stable and very cost effective build around these parts.
