  1. #1 REDCINE RANDOM QUESTIONS
    Hello,

I am currently working with REDCINE-X (506) and REDCINE-X PRO (Build 10) night and day and have a few random questions:

    - when working in Redcine X Pro and using APPLY -> META in the Look Presets REDCINE X PRO crashes all the time - anyone else made this experience?

    - each time i open REDCINE X i have to re-configure the SDI video out of the rocket (YUV instead of RGB, etc.) - is there a way of saving this settings?

    - I export MXF (DNxHD 36) for offline edtiting (each clip = one file) and Quicktime / DNxHD 115 for dailies (mutiple clips = one file) and it seems REDCINE X PRO is much busier with the MXFs than with the Quicktime File - more windmill, much slower in response to the Apple-H command, etc. - this is not scientific, maybe i am wrong about that ;-)

    best wishes and kind regards,
    martin

    Martin,
The two issues above are fixed in build 12.

    Thanks,
    Armen

Not to hijack, but I have a question as well pertaining to how the .RMD files are stored.

Last night I was colouring clips in RC-X Pro b 12 before the online would be made from ProRes renders for a small scale job.
I have 'automatically save .RMD files' enabled in my preferences.
I created a bin (inside an existing bin which already contained all the clips) and dragged selected clips from the browser into the bin. I switched the bottom panel to the Project tab and selected each clip in turn to colour them. I then dragged the clips from the bin on to the timeline and arranged them into the correct order so that I could play them and make sure they matched. I was aware that the grading you perform on the clips in the timeline is not stored in the .RMD file in the clip folder but is unique to the timeline so I was switching back to the project tab to make corrections. This worked for a while until, I think it was after I rendered something, it seemed that all the clips in the bin reverted to their original settings, the bulk grade I did before I started individually colouring them. The timeline still had the correct grades (except the ones I tweaked during review) and I was able to render them out from here as 'Timeline (Separate Clips)'

I'm not sure if the problem I had was a bug or just an issue with my not understanding how REDCINE-X handles look settings.

From my testing now (in 11, hope it holds true for 12), this seems to be the way it works; Each instance of a clip in any bin or on the timeline holds its look settings locally. If you change the look of any one of the instances of the clip (or right click in a bin and select 'Save RMD'), that last look you changed is saved alongside the .R3D file. Now, this is true for the browser window, too, except that every time you switch folders, the .RMD files are loaded again. If you change a look in a bin or a timeline, you need to reload the folder to see it come up to the file browser.

The solution to my problem, since there is no 'Save RMD' option like there is in the bin on the timeline, is to go through and adjust something in each clip on the timeline so that the .RMD files are saved and then to select all the clips in the bins and select 'Reload RMD.' That way, all my original grades will be represented on the timeline and in the bins. I still don't know why the .RMD files were overwritten by old settings within a bin, though. I think those settings may have been currently applied to the same clips in a different bin but I had not loaded those clips, changed their settings or selected 'Save .RMD.'

Is there documentation which details the way REDCINE-X handles look settings?

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

You can try the REDCINE-X PRO manual, accessible from the Help menu.

Here's a brief overview of how things work:
With "Automatically save .RMD files" on, any change made to a clip, whether that clip originates from the browser, bin, or timeline, will result in an RMD being generated.
That change still affects only that clip; for instance, if the saturation of a clip in the timeline is adjusted, a clip referencing the same file in the bin or browser will not be affected.
Clips in the browser retain their settings only while the current directory is active -- as soon as the directory changes, their settings are lost. If you return to that directory, the clips in the browser will load their settings from their RMD files.

I would recommend one of these two workflows:
    1. Turn "Automatically save .RMD files" on, and keep just one clip per file in the project. This is more convenient since you don't have to worry about saving manually, and it's easier to integrate with other applications like Premiere which also read .rmds.
    2. Turn "Automatically save .RMD files" off, and use project files (.rcx files) to manage your grades. This is more flexible since you can have multiple clips per file in your project, each with different grades.

    Hi All,

I'm new here and new to RCX. So I apologise in advance, if this seems a silly question. How do you apply the same grade in RCX to the whole timeline rather than one clip? I can create Look Presets but can't seem to save the grade or apply it to the whole timeline.

    Many thanks

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Hey Pete,

Once you have created a Look Preset, use the drop down box next to "Apply to" in the look preset window. In this drop down box will be the option to apply to "Timeline (all clips)" as well as other options.

    Hope this helps!
