I was asked for a show reel by a client. I never really had a reel and I didn't shoot enough with the Epic to make a full reel. This is all old stuff and to me, it really shows how much I improved over the past year owning RED cameras. Anyway all of this stuff is at least a year old. One scene was shot on RED, try to guess which. I really want feedback to see if I've worked on all the points I tried to improve. All shot, graded, edited, directed by me.

I liked it! I thought the car stuff looked great. You've got a lot of variety which is good also. I liked the music too, but there may have been too many full stops for my taste. Also, the 2nd to last shot should be the last. Its beautiful and a fitting end shot. All in all, I think your old reel looks pretty damn good :)

    Yeah, that's a forklift tattoo. I wasn't always a cinematographer :)

Thanks man. I changed the shots and you're right it is a fitting end. Did you figure out which scene was shot on Epic?

I think it kind of tapers off toward the end. I agree with the stops in edits - kind of distracting.
What is this reel going to be used for? Mainly for clients doing non-narrative stuff?

I think it's a solid commercial reel, I didn't really see many narrative shots that showed off your skills and ability to control light. (1:21 really liked the dolly shot with the girl's shadow being lit into a silhouette.)
You also go back to a lot of similar shots - the car, for example. I loved those shots but you could probably benefit from cutting down your TRT a good :30s.

Well, I didnt go to film school and I hardly got any offers to shoot narrative pieces with my 5D so that's probably why.
Ofcourse this has all changed now.
I did shoot a few shorts with the 5d and I feel I did really well with everything considered ie budgets, locations and whatnot. The thing is i lost a couple of hard drives and that's everything I have right now on my old computer.
Thanks for taking the time to watch.
I think you're right with it dragging on a bit though

    Mohamed,

I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone regarding the stops, they where disruptive to the flow especially considering the music. Although I like the song I felt it tended to not really match the cutting style (but hey that's quite subjective). I think your car shots should have a money shot appeal but because you use it often it tends to dilute it's impact (personally I'd limit it to 3 shots , 1 interior and to exteriors cut together to show a sequence). Additionally some of your female shots were quite similar and could probably be trimmed out (again quite subjective). On the high note, your 5d footage is some of the most beautifully graded footage I've seen. You made it pop very nicely. I'm really looking forward to your Epic stuff.

    Cheers

Thanks man, I never really edited a reel so I knew right away that I'd make some mistakes. I pretty much agree on everything you said and I'm waiting to get a bit more feedback and will modify my reel accordingly.

The BMW stuff looked rad... Was the really vintage-looking stuff done with RAW stills? It looked like it held up really well even with all the post-processing.

Video, it would've been a hassle shooting that many stills and editing them. I tried a couple of technique and finally figured out the best way to do it was to actually pause certain frames and divide them in groups based on the speed I want those frames to be played at. I think it's a bit filter heavy and sadly the compression I used when making those videos was terrible so O was on the fence to include them on this reel.
