Ummm , isn't this easy to do with a 3d lut , folks?
I mean, come on. From the previous version it's a slight S curve, and basically some saturation in some of the reds.
A 24x24x24 should be plenty to capture all the nuances of the 'color science' of redgamma 3.
3d Luts are a cinch to make in Nuke.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding peoples needs. Any serious color correction software package supports 3d luts on media import.

Well, my guess is that the issue is not whether it can be implemented as a 3d lut or not, the issue is how to implement the lut in hardware, in realtime.

I've never seen the circuitry of the RED One so I can't tell how it does what it does, my guess is they have some sort of FPGA that does the lut, maybe in the way of a transfer function that expresses the curve they want to achieve. Using FPGAs probably gives them the ability to reprogram the circuit with a simple firmware update, and run at realtime speed, without burning that much power.

But then, there is a limit in terms of what you can do, and the complexity of what you can achieve in realtime in those circuits. There is also the memory issue and backwards compatibility. Maybe making room for RC3 would imply removing something from the FPGA to make space for it.

Who knows. Only the RED team knows what are the challenges ahead. I would just say that the camera is not quite a general purpose computer that can just run any mathematical function in realtime, so comparing it with Nuke is not a fair comparison.

I see, you are worried about the LCD image/video outputs having the new color as well.
Otherwise, the new color look is just a meta data tag in the file, with no extra in camera processing.

RG3 should work fine with R1 on set as well. Makes sense that it is now announced.

    Ouch...

That's about the silliest thing I have read in a while. If it is such a burden, I can help you out with your camera...

Ok, then show me what camera you want to compare with...

Epic is better, sure, and there is some debate as to whether Scarlet or R1 is the better. But then what do you wanna compare with?
